Hi Guys.
Does anyone know the voltage range of the cars?
My problem is that my stereo amp cuts out because the voltage seems to be creeping up to 16 volts and it has circuitry to stop any damage.
Would the regulator be part of the alternator?

Right, apparently the voltage is much too high and sounds like the regulator.

Does anyone know if the regulator is replaceable?

Anyone got any numbers for the alternator?

Assuming that the alternator is the same between the US and UK cars, the voltage regulator is mounted on the back of the alternator. If I remember correctly, it's held in place by two torx screws, and replacement is a fairly simple job. I know we got one from our local Ford dealer here in the States, but I don't remember which car we told the dealer that it was for (the parts department at the local dealership can't seem to look up a part by number, only by model and year.) Maybe a Contour SVT?

about 9-14.4 volts, always measure ac and dc to establish the the rectifier is working as well as the regulator.

Right, I have decided to change the alternator and have removed it from the car in about 10 minutes flat (not).

There is a lead that is bolted on via a ring crimp and there is another pair of cables which go onto the alternator via a plug, but off the plug is a red cable which then seems to be going into the alternator and a load of mastic on it, any ideas what that cable is?
I have just cut it with thoughts of through crimping it when I get a new alternator

Hi Mate , think you'l find it goes onto a push on connector, thats what pulled off when i was on the RR and the light came on !

Alternator is of a ford cougar;mondeo 2.5 v6 got mine from Andrew page (01733 340177) about £150 i think !!

New alternator fitted......Kin voltage is kin higher.

Has anyone got a digital voltmeter they can put on their car when it is running.

Check the cables inside the heat shield running away from the alternator, mine was all crispy and shorted together !

the 2.5 is known for producing too many volts - i know a guy who did a high speed run on his and popped the radio every time

is it a 2.5 ?

can you change the dia of the pully so it revs slower ?

a mate of mine in St Albans made me up a smaller pulley for a car that was producing too few volts - so i'm sure a bigger one will reduce the speed

its 3-0 ltr and even on tickover it is 15.4 volts or thereabouts.
i think it is probably something to do with the small wires as they are meant to shut the regulator down

Hi Simon.

No it stays fairly constant, if you turn air con or something on it dips but then comes back up again.

Hi andy , could it be your volt meter as we are only talking about 0 .9 of a volt , is that going to cause a issue ??
