another dead 5 speed.
Discussion
So a few fast laps at bruntingthorpe and home on the back of an AA truck. The gear box is dead. So, what are my options? I have LSD and will be doing the chassis mod to save time and money. It is a GT03. Can I go 6 speed? What about a change to the nasty cable linkage? This will be an autumn/winter upgrade, so I have time to do it right.
To sort the 5 speed out is pretty straight forward although if it's a gear issue you might need a new box as I don't think you can get gear sets , gearbox man are the best to speak too .
Have priced to change to a 6 speed and it looks like 2 to 3 k ! Would love to do the change but my modified 5 speed is coping fine with 460 bhp so can not justify it !!!

I just upgraded to the 6 speed, lots of work and around £4k including strengthening and lsd.... its a stronger box tho.
If you decide to go this route be aware that you need new clutch, new starter etc etc as well as new cable change... I did it purelly so i can push the power up beyond what the 5speed can apparently take.

The damage occurred on change down from full chat in 5th. Not a problem off the line, but it is now almost impossible to select a gear and if you manage it, you can only get 1st or reverse. It then whines in 1st and sounds and feels like all the gears are loose in reverse. I am running 390hp, so am disappointed that it gave up. Any ideas please.
Welcome to the club Andy and sorry you've got to go through the pain of this.
I looked into a six spd box when mine went as they are still in plentiful supply unlike the MTX-75 box which are like rocking horse s
t.
The price disauded me tho as it's not just the box. You'll need a new starter motor, new LSD, mods to the tank, gear-linkages and I think, but am not sure, that the engine mounts need to be adapted as well.
In the end I sent my 5spd to the gearboxman for a rebuild, shot-peening and machined for oil cooler.
Worked out much cheaper but not cheap!!
If you do go for the 6spd, you should still send that to be strengthened as the 5ths go on these too which just adds money to the bill.

Yes the 6 speed box is the cheapest item... cost me less than the starter in fact... its the rest that you have to upgrade that costs the money, including engine mounts as the 6 speed also lowers the engine!!!
I had had my 5 speed rebuilt with shot peaned gears and oil cooling etc only 2 months previously and thought long and hard about sticking with it... however there is no getting away from the fact that its just not as strong as the 6 speed so I bit the bullet and sold the 5 speed and upgraded to the 6... spent the same money again upgrading the 6 speed with lsd and shot peaning & oil cooling.

Mate this happened to mine. Well it destroyed 5th whilst on the motorway!!
Mine ended up at the very place you have just left. Matt and Dave (Jetstream at Brunters) stuck a 6spd, LSD and M400 gearlinkage. Got to say it was the best thing that happened to the car. The gearlinkage made a whole load of difference and I never had any more problems for the next 2 years before letting her go. I have spoken to the new owner and she's still going strong, even with a lot of miles being piled on.
Hope you get it fixed soon mate.

Thanks guys. Not sure of the direction to take yet, but will start making enquiries and getting quotes when I get back off holiday. Cheers. I would really like the 6 speed as at least it feels like I am getting an upgrade for the pain.
