Another gear linkage thread 5sp 2002
Discussion
All,
Have never been happy with the gear change, but with nothing to compare to, I do not actually know if I have a real problem. Gear change has always been a bit sloppy and sometimes hard to engage......question is, when running in say 3rd gear, how much does the gearstick move from left to right?
Any comments greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

It's a combination of things. A little is due to wear in the joints. But probably the largest portion of the slop is due to the design and implementation of the mechanism. It's not a very tight tolerance setup, and all of the little bits of play add up. And, the design of the cable mechanism adds to the lack of precision.
Might be easier, and give better results, just to install the M400 mechanism...

M400 setup is for the 6 speed and wont fit the 5speed.... I didn't like the gearchange in my 5 speeder so I upgraded to the 6speed box and M400 linkage, its expensive (£4k+) and a lot of work.
Sounds to me like the front rose joint by the lever has loosened up, not easy to get at and fix tho Im afraid.
