Brother needs help

Dear All,
My brother's M400 has died at the weekend, all electrics work, engine turns over fine, fuel pressure is there but no spark and no RPM indication. RAC bod says its the crankshaft sensor. What do people think?

Also he's in Faversham, Kent. Can anyone recomend anyone closer than Mole Valley who might know about these engines?

He's just moived in so no internet hence my asking.

Hi Paul

plug in your laptop and get the noble ecu tool to read the ecu

if you can see all the sensors and there is no rpm reading on the software when you crank it then it might be the crank sensor

does the fuel pump prime when you turn the key on ?

Thanks, a bit tricky this one as I'm in Wimbledon, Mark's in London and the cars in Kent! Yes the fuel pump primes but we don't have the laptop setup. Hopefully Mark will chime in soon with any other info.

Anyone got a part number for the cranksensor?

There are quirte a few part numbers listed (11 actually)
Ford part numbers which should be relevant are 4040494 or 1S7Z7M101KA.

These numbers should be enough for any decent motor factors to cross reference with for a pattern part as well?

Could be the crank sensor - they're cheap enough, and easy enough to change that you may as well just swap it out to see what happens. Might also want to swap out the cam sensor, too...

Here's a stupid question - has he checked the four fuses in the engine compartment?

I thought that as well but the fact that the pump is priming means that the ECU live and the trigger to the pump must be working ??

I may have this wrong - it's been a while, but I think that out of the fused 12v feeds to the ECU, there are separate feeds for the ECU power, the ignition coil drivers, and the fuel system. I think the wiring diagrams just lump all of these together into "ECU Supply". So, the ECU may still be powering up, the fuel pump priming, but no coil drivers, thus no spark. Anyway, worth a check.

Before it all gets to complicated, check all of the relay bases and the shorting connector on the firewall behind the driver, chances are it will be corrosion or duff relay, swap them around to make sure, also worth replacing the four fuses abouve the relays as they seem to age.

Relay failed .... simples ;-)

I've not worked on one of these before, what a beautiful car, looks the nuts on the road.
I must say that I am somewhat surprised by the location of some of the fuses / relays...

Many thanks for helping out little bro, going over there and getting his car back on the road, he's a happy little bunny again. Some of us have moved our ECUs etc into the people compartment for, as you imply, bleedin obvious reasons.
