Where on the exhaust are you talking about? The manifold-to-head studs are M8x1.25, as are the turbo-to-downpipe studs. I think that the manifold-to-turbo bolts are also M8x1.25, but that's a guess. Then, there are the bolts on the three-bolt flanges at the Y-pipe and at the muffler, which I don't remember at all...

No - as you have just found out, they leak and start blowing with the gasket present! So long as the faces are clean and flat, you won't have a problem. It's what was done to the Ford WRC cars to obviate the same issue
