scary noise on hard left corners
Discussion
Hi,
I've got a new noise that is a bit scary, If I take a left hand corner "hard", as in I guess generate a bit of lateral G I get a noise I've not heard since the compressor was grinding against my exhaust housing on my RS Turbo years ago !!
Or the powersteering pump lol.
Hope its the second of the two, Power steering fluid level is fine though. No smoke and car is going (in a straight line) better than ever since its trip to NMS.
NMS couldnt replicate the sound, but I guess they dont want to go pinging customer cars round corners, they invited me to take them out but I didnt have the time so here I am asking the educated !
Noise doesnt happen on a right hand corner, is this some form of Oil surge , NMS tell me I have a TDS, must admit I wouldnt know. Oil level is fine and new within the last 500 - 1000 miles (all done by NMS).
Thanks!

I have had something like this for the last 5yrs and no one has worked it out. Think mine came after the engine was put back in after LSD was fitted. As its out again and the box is being rebuilt I'm going to see if its still there?I've got a new noise that is a bit scary, If I take a left hand corner "hard", as in I guess generate a bit of lateral G I get a noise I've not heard since the compressor was grinding against my exhaust housing on my RS Turbo years ago !!

thanks Bondy, the trouble is its the last thing stopping me putting it on track, I've had it 2 months, had the health check from NMS, remap, new manifolds and im itching to give it a go!
I'll try it off boost in a high gear - do you think this would be enough to count the turbo out ? Would the compressor still be spinning much at low revs (I guess the answer is yes).
Originally I thought it was disc or bearing releated. It sounds like its coming from the right hand side of the car, which would agree with the left hand corner, ie weight transfer etc.

If it`s only at speed it doesn`t sound like a power steering pump/system issue. Sounds like a wheel bearing type issue - is it from the front or rear of the car? Could be a brake disc scraping the caliper if a wheel bearing has gone or the hub nut,(or wheel nuts),has loosened....
Thanks Bob, was just typing my reply to Bondy.... I have receipt for Porsche nuts in the history file but worth checking the torque on them.I did think it was disc related, whats the best check for a wheel bearing - jack the car and move wheel with hands ? They cant be that much to replace them for piece of mind I guess.
i had something that made the whole car vibrate and make a horrid grinding sound round left hand bends in my xr2i years ago.
garages couldnt replicate it but when i got it to a mates garage on a ramp and sat in it in the air with the left lock on it became apparent that the driveshaft was trying to get out of the gearbox. a new driveshaft cured it.
worth a look. is it worse over slight bumps/gradients when doing a fast left?

I wouldnt say its any worse over gradients or bumps, but today it continued for a second after I'd exited the bend, hmmmmmm its a high pitched metal on metal kind of sound rather than a vibration ? Does sound like a disc / caliper maybe due to hubs etc. garages couldnt replicate it but when i got it to a mates garage on a ramp and sat in it in the air with the left lock on it became apparent that the driveshaft was trying to get out of the gearbox. a new driveshaft cured it.

Will check out as soon as im back home with a tool-kit, thanks for the advice folks !
Mine made the noise coasting round a corner also, it seemed to be when load was applied to the right hand side of the car.
This vid was back in 2006 (only had 260BHP back then). You will need to listen hard but when the car goes around a left corner there is nothing but on a left you can hear it.
Oh yeah, it was a seat of the pants moment at the begining. lol

I think you've ruled it out by pointing out it sounds like metal on metal, but when I first got hold of mine I had a noise at high lateral G that had me properly worried. Eventually I noticed that the cable-ties holding the air hoses from the front intakes had loosened/slipped and were letting the hoses move. The G combined with lots of steering deflection meant they were rubbing on the wheels in tight turns.
As I say, probably over simplistic, but a nice cheap repair if you're lucky!

Hi Alastair,
The same thing happened to me a couple of years back. Took a hard left hander (like yours, nothing abnormal in hard rights), and then shat myself when i heard a horrible sound.....i thought the wheel was sheering off!! From memory, it was down to the bracket that holds the power steering reservoir in place. It had snapped which resulted in the reservoir leaning over in hard G left handers. Fingers crossed, your fix is just as simple

I had a similar noise a few weeks ago and it turned out to be the mounting of the handbrake shoe within the disk on the left hand rear wheel.
The small bolt had come undone and the block had fallen out and it was getting caught between the shoe and the drum on right hand corners.
AWFULL noise - free to fix. I felt very lucky!

Thanks Adrian, out of interest how would this manifest itself ? Would this give me the play in the disc / caliper or am I wearing the inside of my hub out ?mgbond said:
