I`m thinking of doing the tunnel mod before the warm weather arrives (!), and I`ve got a couple of questions:
1. Most people seem to have done the mod whilst they`ve been replacing the radiator and/or hoses. I`d prefer to leave those parts alone - is it possible to do the mod by just removing the front aluminium undertray and then having enough access?
2. Obviously road grim/grit and spray will potentially then be directed down the tunnel where the gear lever mechanism is - has anyone had a problem with this aspect? (The heater box is higher up and the pipework enters it vertically so I can imagine no contaminents will get there but the tunnel is much lower down and with a near horizontal pipe entry).

Yes - you can do the mod without going near the radiator etc. I believe that guys have actually done the mod from above but I can imagine it's easier from below with the undertray removed. It's still a pig of a job to get the access plate removed and then back in.
I have not noticed any crap getting down the tunnel although don't really go out in the rain. There are clearly the access plates that can be removed to inspect and you still have the front baffles unless you remove them. Also the tunnel access is still higher than the front scoops.
the tunnel mod is done to aid air flow to the front of the engine also to aid removal of smells and heat in the cab generally will try find some pics it has proved very useful mod for me in summer as i have no air con but i blank the pipes off on cold days asi have no gaitor on gear stick and it makes car freezing ?
pic of tunnel mod while heater box out of way mod consisted of 2 pea clips 2 self tappers and 2 tie straps to locate and a 70 mmhole cutter to suit pipes i used i also removed baffle plates in front scoops and redirected other pipes towards brakes and meshed out funnels on heater box [this may be of use] 
h to remove the heater box to get to that stage! You just have to choose where you want to encounter pain.
If you're really tricky, you can do the tunnel mod without removing the heater box or the floor pan. I usually remove the front clam, remove the fans, remove the panel that goes in front of the heater box, remove the four ventilation ducts. If your car has the wiper tray, remove that, too. Then, you can reach in from the front, under the heater box and over the steering rack, and get to everything you need to get to. Getting the plate in/out is a little fiddly, but still possible...
