I had to do this once as well.
Then 6 months later got a letter saying that the speed camera was incorrectly setup and that they would return my points ...
But I did the speed awareness course!!! And they wouldn't refund the cost of the course, the day I had to take off work and my train fare to Wales!!!!
The course was full of retired old men, I was by far the youngest there. All they did was complain about why they had to sit the course and that they had been driving for 70 years and it should be the youngesters who should be caught.

HA ha I had to do one when I was 23, as above, lots of considerably older people, moaning about boy racers.........I gave it 60 degrees of oppo in the the Z4M on the way out, best part of the course was the B road to the farm where it was held !

You are indeed correct. All motoring offences come in three flavours, Minor, Major and Hybrid. Minors are not criminal, but majors and some hybrids are.e.g. Drunk Driving is, a fixed penalty notice isn't.
CRB checks I've seen of people that have FPNs (even if challenged in court and lost) show this also to be the case.
