Plug gaps

I believe the gaps should be 37 thou or 1mm.
mine were at about half that, what effect would or could that have

That can cause a weak spark, so could induce a misfire?
Could possibly also cause a backfire?

Just for info, 40 thou is 1mm.

37 is correct though.
