Trouble in Cornwall.......help needed

Think I've got a problem with my limited slip diff. On the way down to Cornwall yesterday I notice a squeak developing. Put it down to the rain we were driving through. Took the car to check this afternoon and it's coming from the rear left half shaft or poss cv joint. The noise gets worse when going around a right bend and goes completely when going around a left bend. What worries me is, is this going to give out on the way home, or is the problem nothing to worry about until I get home???? Got about 80 miles to get home. Any advice, gladly accepted!!!

Hi mate , I wonder if the hub nut is coming loose ?? Any way you can jack it up to see if there is any play in the wheel ??

As I rotate the wheel I can feel the vibration as it makes this tight squeaking noise(if that makes any sense).

Hub nut is the very large nut that bolts on to the end of the driveshaft , they can come loose , a good upgrade is to change to Porsche hub nuts .

No way of jacking the car. Loading the left hand side makes it worse, loading the right hand side the noise goes completely. Wil recheck that hub again, did check wheel and all seems ok. Slight play in half shaft and when I pull and push this it makes the noise so you could be right Simion.

Had a play with the wheel and there is play. Does this need to be tightened now or can it wait or is a million dollar question???

If it was mine l would get the hub tightened if it's loose, think it's a 32mm nut & torque to 270. Off for some tapas now.

Sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs but the way to tell is to jack it up and grip the top and bottom of the tyre and rock firmly, there should be very little or no play depending on the type of bearing you have. If you can feel play with it sitting on the ground then get it checked by someone who knows, are you in the AA or RAC or anything. I wouldn't risk driving far if you are unsure, this could be either a loose hub nut or bearing going.

Being 17 stone, I can check the wheel without jacking. There's definate play so will need to sort something out for tomorrow.

Defo sounds like hub nut or bearing , get it checked , the grinding could be the disc rubbing on the pads .

Contacted local garage, they are having a look tomorrow morning. Thanks for the info guys hope it's just a matter of a tightening of the wheel hub.

Got to be a good place to start !!! Get them to check wheel bearing as well , I knackered the passenger side one in 4000 miles last year !!

Quick thanks for the quick and helpful advice. Guy from St Just garage came out and sure enough is was a loose hub nut. Couldn't believe how much play there was once we jacked the car up.

Where is the best place to get the Porsche hub nuts?? Once again cheers guys

i had a hub nut come loose,(offside) as is nearly always the case.luckly for me it reared its ugly head on a airfield, as when i nailed it on a bend i got spat off big time and ended up in the gress... straw field actually,and spent 3 days clearing out the straw as it got into every nook and cranny. the stupid thing was ive had 2 porsche hub nuts sat in my draw for nearly 2 years... lets just say it got fitted that eve. go to any decent porsche agent with the part no. they were only around three quid each. had i have had that happen on the road my bill would have been thousands.

Be sure to check the wheel bearing - it doesn't take long for the wheel bearing to go if the hub nut loosens up.

Red Loctite is also a good idea, even with the better-locking Porsche nuts...

I have fitted Porshe nuts on my 3R which has non-standard `Image` wheels. I have painted a line on the nut and the end of the shaft so I can see if the nuts starts to undo. There is a hub `cap` that is easily removeable with these wheels so whenever I check the tyre pressures I do a quick check of the nuts. (So as to speak....).
