Starting problems

Hi,

Car was running fine the previous day, got in the following morning and it just clicked when I turned the key. fuel pump primes so I dont believe it is the immobiliser.I have had all the relays out, cleaned and replaced the same with the 4 fuses in the engine bay. I am getting 12.6v at the live feed to the starter motor, but when it is being cranked i get only 10.4v at the trigger wire. The click seems to come from the starter solenoid. I did take the battery from my other car and connect with jump leads to the noble still just got a click although i cant be sure that battery is in tip top condition as it is a few years old. I put a new bosch silver battery on noble last year but did allow it to go flat once, the optimate battery conditioner seems to charge it and will give a green light once the charge cycle has finished.

So is it starter motor or battery or something else???

Sounds like the battery is no longer holding its charge, but strange with jump leads it didnt turn over. I would try again with jump leads making sure you have a good earth to chassis.

Have you tried the good old fashioned 'tt said starter with hammer' technique?

Indeed it does, its exactly what happened to my car last time i had the engine out. Its all gone wrong on my car!

I've had two starter motors kick the bucket on mine, so that could well be it. Or the battery, cus when they go, they just give up the will to live.

I have recently been through this with exactly the same symptoms.

Turned out to be the starter motor as well. Indcidently I was told not to give it a whack with a hammer because you end up shattering the magnets inside and then It cant be rebuilt.

I bought a new one from Peter Smith sports cars (wasn't cheap!), but apparently they can be repaired.
