What's missing? Should there be some sort of washer in between here? If so, what sort?

Im not sure but maybe there should be a brass washer?

I'd also like to put solid fittings in to connect my fuel filter and pump, could someone advise on what i need to get and where, its the bosche 044 pump and standard M400 filter.

I believe it's an o-ring boss fitting, which seals with an o-ring. If you remove the plastic plug in the top of the fuel pump and take a look at the female side, you should see a large chamfer at the opening - the o-ring goes in the groove at the base of the male threads, and gets compressed into the chamfer at the top of the female threads. Make sure to use a fuel-rated o-ring, like a Viton one.

Looking at the male fitting there is no washer so I'd guess that it's a BSPP fitting and not SAE in which case what you need is a Dowty seal.

It is a straight, non tapered thread and I did first think of a dowty seal but as both parts are ali I wasn't sure?

Yep should be a alloy type washer , speak to Earls they supplied me some for Grants setup !!

not a plain washer, a copper one.. and thats what I used on that fitting and both of the pumps on my car now

The fitting can take a rubber o ring or a washer... the collapsable washer in the link above is the most ideal solution but if you look at the pressure side of the pump its assembled from Bosche with copper washers

The fitting on the outlet side of the pump is a banjo type which uses flat copper washers to make the seal. I'd go for a Dowty type in the inlet side though.

Have gone for a standard copper washer simply out of convenience but will keep a close eye on it and replace with a dowty seal when I can get one.
Would anyone recommend a blob of threadlock too? Or is it not advisable with fuel?

Used copper washer on mine, all is good and no threadlock.
