The Damage that Jack did....

This is the damage that occurred after the car slid off the jacking point as it was being raised. Issue was that the jack did not creep forward as it was being raised, so consequently the jacking arm just moved backwards onto the unsupported ali panels. The sills were broken at a point 13cms from the floor - so anyone who is wider than 13cms should never, ever get under the car without using axle stands..




And after a week with these guys www.dcwhiteaccidentrepair.co.uk it's back, good as new. Used to working with Nobles so very handy for anyone in the Essex/London area. Highly recommended. Also big thanks to Matt and Dave (Jetstream)for coming up with a new mesh at v short notice and sending it direct to the repairers.

those fans in the side pod look intersting rob, do they vent into the wheel arch?

The exact same thing happened to me a few weeks ago and cost £1200 to fix including a new fuel pump.

Rob, did you have the side scoop fans fitted?

Hi Chris -yes cooler turned through 90 degrees and 2 fans added which vent through the wheel arch liner. Only really needed on track. Very little air gets into the side pod above 70mph so fans are effective in keeping oil temps down when pressing on. Much easier option than moving the cooler up front.

Hi Mike - you could say I was not best pleased! Fortunately (if that's the right word) mine was on the other side so the jacking arm didn't hit anything as the car came down. Real mess of the silll and pod though, not to mention the ali panels.

Very sorry to hear about your misfortune. A similar problem that I've seen is that, if you jack the car up from the side, as you go higher the angle between the bottom of the car and the pad on the jack becomes greater. Since the aluminum floor is relatively slippery, the jack can kick out from under the car, causing the same sort of damage.

Some hints to make this less likely. Jack the car up in increments, using jack stands to support the vehicle as you raise it up as evenly as possible. Be sure to clean off the bottom of the car where you place the jack - road grime, oil, dirt can make the panel even more slippery. Also, clean off the pad on your jack. If your jack has a metal cup where it supports the car, use a chunk of wood, hockey puck, rubber jack pad between the cup and the car, so that there's a higher friction flat surface between the two.

Instead of jacking the car up from the side, I usually slide the jack in from the back, under the diffuser, and use the frame rail where the rear motor mount is attached. You will need a jack with a flat pad - if you try to use one with a cup, you run the risk of cracking your diffuser or denting the aluminum underpanel unless you use a piece of wood, hockey puck, etc. Or, you can use two jacks, one on each side, to pick up the car evenly...
