Fuel tank return

I took the fuel tank back down today to drill out the return, i did this with a 6mm, is that ok, or does it need more? It did not removed much metal?

I did 6.5mm but felt 7mm was too ambitious having measured the OD of the pipe at the minimum where the barbed part is narrow. It made no difference to the noise of the pump. I'm begining to wonder if the regulator is poor? Looking across other sites noisy Bosch pumps are far from rare.

Steve mentioned the fuel filter may be a restriction.
I suppose if we find a better flow replacement and the noise goes away we have our answer.

I will redrill with a 6.5mm Rob, cheers for the advice, i am just wondering though, where did the return being a retriction originate and is your pump still noisy because maybe 6.5mm is still not enough?

You have two returns on your tank, does your fuel pump still make a noise?
I have the tank out so whatever "needs" doing i may aswell take the opportunity.

Hi Chris , my tank is heavily modded with a new regulator and bloody big filter and have just fitted a new rubber mounted pump and guess what ?? Yep it's still bloody noisy !!!!!! Not going to bother with the 044 pumps again over the winter the engine is coming out so going to fit a different make of pump !!! generally I think the STD 044 pump does make a noise !!

Lol, cheers for that info SImon you have saved me a lot of work trying to make the noise go away.
So what is a good replacement pump?
i have no problem with putting a pump in the tank if it means i get rid of the noise

Don't know yet will do some research later in year but on my Ultima I used a Aeromotive A1000 pump and it was very good !! " although not cheap !!!

I've bought a Fuelab model 40401, which is is rated for more than enough pounds/hour and is supposed to be speed controllable. I'll post results after it is installed.

So far with my new tank setup my pair of 044s are very quite.
I didn't use the a1000 as I hear it was extremely noisy, whatever causes the 044s to be noisy is going to cause same on other pumps
