Lots of play on gear stick?

I've just fitted another gearbox and changed one of the cables and there seems to be so much play on the gear stick that its difficult to get all the gears is this just a case of ajusting the cables?

Hi Steve , the design is poor and the linkage from the lever can get very sloppy , less likely to be the cables though , Jetstream are working on a new lever with cables that go directly onto the gearlever , I have fitted one of these units to a Jetstream car and the difference is incredible !!! And will soon be fitted to my own car !!!
Selection problems though could also be down to cable length though . Tux

I believe there`s a section in the build manual on adjusting the gear shift cables.
I`d be interested in the new Jetstream linkage - how much and when?

Final spec are just about done , just waiting To test drive the car involved , but the end results are a massive improvement !! , was hoping to do my own car for Silverstone but time constaints and hub failure have put paid to that !!!! Will put up more details as soon as I have them . Tux

Oddly, the very first time I drove a Nob, one of the very first comments I made to the sales guy was "Is this gear stick actually connected to anything". And I reckon you can guess what is reply was !

Simon could the 3L cars have a different lenth cable to the 2.5L cars even if there both 5 speeders as i swapped one of mine that was looking worn.I need to get this sorted before 10th as its so bad.

Had a look again at this tonight. and got a mate to move the gearstick while so i could see what was going on at the gearbox end. I worked out that adjusting one cable move the neutral point backwards and forwards, so ive moved it and now i can actually get 2nd and reverse gear. But everthing is still really floppy and worse than my last box.
does anyone now how it affects things if i adjust were the cables enter the tunnel or would this only move in the same respects as the the adjustment on the box?

Hi Steve , the length of cables is critical , only advice I can give is to keep tweaking the cables about until they work !!! Sorry not much help .,!!

Bondy , pricing is yet to be confirmed by Jetstream but the mod will work to any 5 speed car , both seats have to come out and carpet tunnel needs pealing back but job should be able to be done in 3 to 4 hours . Tux

On 2.5's check where the gear lever is bolted to the top of the tunnel. Remove the glass fibre surround to the gear lever and check there isn't a big split in the metal of the tunnel where the gear lever mechanism bolts onto it.

I had exactly what you describe and it was because the whole mechasim could move. A few big washers over the crack solved the problem for me.

Ok cheers simon. well at least i can get all gears now i spose. Its just that when im in various gears the gear stick is touching the cut out in the tunnel so no room for manoeuvre. but then again after all ive done to the car lately im going to have a few teething troubles
Ps tell those lads at jetstream to hurry up i want to do this mod

Will the new linkage only be for 5 speed boxes - or will there be a 6 speed version as well?

Hi Bob , the lever is the same but the 6 speed will need longer cables like the m400 as they go around the bay not over the top like the 5 speed . Tux

Cheers joust, I had this before as well so i had to bolt a metal shim across the crack. i spose i should check it to see if its still holding out.

Peter does the 6 speed kit already... I have it on mine and it fantastic

So Far we have had to get special cables for the 5 speed to fit onto the gearbox linkage and if someone with a std 3r 6 speed wants to upgrade then can but will need either new longer cables to go aroung the bay or use a shorted cable and go the m400 route although the linkage on top of the box is different , Jetstream already do a M400 gearlinkage upgrade which is similar to the Factory upgrade .

Ok lets be clear... there are 2 stages to upgrading the 6 speeder.

Stage 1 is fit the gear lever and new cables but retain the gearbox shift
Stage 2 is to go to full M400 spec which is changing the entire package

Cant see any point in not going the whole hog on the 6 speeder as its similar cost... but with the 5 speeder you cant fit the M400 as the box end is different.

Are there any plans for Jetstream or ano to produce a short shift kit for the M400 like the one Hoover produces in the US.

Keen to get one but Hoover is very expensive and then I have to add shipping, import duty and VAT
