unscrew the gator and lift it up - there is s nut underneath the knob

What year and model car do you have? the later versions are a bit more involved.

Slightly longer instructions.

Unscrew the plastic surround (arm rest) that goes around the gearstick. Pull it upwards so that it is above the gear knob and you'll see a nut that holds the gaiter on, Loosen this nut and the gear knob will then come off.
