Door mirror not folding/unfolding

When the weather was very cold the ns door miror would sometimes not unfold when getting in the car. Drivers side works fine. I put that down the fact that the NS was furthest from the house wall and therefore coldest. When the weather warmed ujp things returned to normal. However now the mirror quite often gets stuck half way - but will eventually gets out of that mode and work normally for a while.
Any ideas?
How do you remove the plastic to get at the innards of the mirror? I suspect it's just a push fit but I'm reluctant to be too brutal with it.
Any help much appreciated.
