I'm trying to figure out what the black button on the door handles actually do, mine don't seem to have any function at all. Car is 2025 GT.

I've looked through the manual (is it only me who thinks this is pretty poor?) and these buttons are supposed to lock \ unlock the car if the "hands free card" is within the proximity of the car, I have the remote key card, which is fine but should I have a "hands free card" as well?

Unlock and lock the car with the key card in your pocket.

If you've been using the button on the key card to lock and unlock the car the hands free system may need re-setting; 1) unlock the car, 2) start the car, 3) turn off the car, 4) get out and shut the door, 5) press the black button on the door handle, the car should now lock, give it a few seconds, press the button again and it should lock.

Remote key card and "hands free card" are one and the same.

If you lock the car with the card, you have to open it with the card as the 'hands free' is disabled.

Only after starting the car will the door buttons (i.e. 'hands free') be enabled.

Worth noting that pressing the key card button twice deadlocks the car such that you can't open the doors from inside the car (so breaking the window won't allow a thief to lean in and open the door).

Finally, holding down the key card lock button will disable the interior movement sensors, useful for ferries! (it always amuses me, when sailing on the Solent, the cacophany of car alarms as you pass the IOW ferry!).

I wonder how Alhine came to the conclusion that pressing a button on the door was a "hands free" operation?

Unless you press the button with your knob?

Your hands are free of your keys......

The button is on the door handle. Other than your hand, what else are you going to use to pull the handle?

Exactly, its not hands free then, is it?

Press a button on the fob or the door, both involve your hands.

I think it's actually called keyless entry, but whatever smile

Do you expect the door to open itself?

I prefer a system where you have to actively lock/unlock the door. Rather than walk away and hope the hands free system did its thing.
The problem is using the term hands free for the Alpine system, which clearly isn t.

Yes, thats what i was getting it, keyless entry is the term. Not, hands free.

My car is exactly the same, you either press the button on the fob, or it too has a little black button by the handle.

Of course, some do unlock as you approach the car, which I'm not sure is such a good idea really.

Since I normally keep the key in my pocket, I find it very handy. Not as secure as using the card, I believe - presumably because the card must be transmitting for a much longer time.

Me too. I rarely lock it with the card.

The boot button confused me for a while mind, until I realised that the card in my pocket needed to be not too close…

I never use the hand-held keyless entry key card fob. I just keep that about my person somewhere.

I don't use hands free, too much of a security risk imho.

This for me. I think the way it is done on the Alpine is excellent. Turning on/off the keyless entry in most cars involves going into the menu and changing settings which commits you to one or the other.

With the Alpine you can basically choose the level of security each time you lock the car. I only use the keyless for short periods, usually if I am in sight of the car, otherwise I lock it properly with the fob.
