Just curious if people are using normal E10 fuel or E5 super unleaded fuel in their A110's and for those who have tried both options, what are your thoughts - is there any noticeable difference in performance etc?

Tesco 99 E5 for me. & I can't say if there's a difference - I rarely have to use another fuel.

T99 or whatever it's called now. Used it since I've owned nice(er) cars so 15 years or so.

Always use Shell V-Power as they’re local but isn’t Esso 99 supposed to be as good as it gets?

I use both. Can’t tell the difference. I use V-power for track days (and a tank prior) and if in France where it seems less of a premium price-wise but 95 most of the year.

I have put super in mine (usually Tesco 99 as it's not too pricy) but can't tell the difference so it's 95 for me everytime.
If I did trackdays, which I don't, I would treat it to a tank of 99 for the day as would be at full throttle much more than on the road but for fast road driving I can't see the point.

Thanks guys, looks like 95 is fine for general use which is what I suspected to be honest. My old Esprit definitely used to run better on 99 but it was a more highly strung engine with a much more primative ECU!

I've convinced myself thatpickup from low revs is better with 99 octaine - whether vpower or Tesco. You would expect the ECU to retard the ignition on 95 at times due to the high compression ratio. That said, the car runs perfectly ok on 95 on the odd occasions I've had to use it.

Mine's almost always on 95. Times when I've used premium I've wondered if any better running, smoothness, power or efficiency that I think I've noticed is really just placebo effect. I understand premium can have some enhanced cleaning effects to prevent carbon build up, so maybe it's good for that?

I've got a cupboard full of old rope, if you'd like to buy some...?

I seem to recall David Pook saying 99 makes no difference so I run 95.

This. It’s designed to run on SUL, so use it rather than rely on engine tech to make using the cooking stuff work OK.

I’ve not found any difference between 95 and SUL in Porches, and that includes fuel consumption, but my 911 always gets SUL.

And if what the marketing stuff about cleaner engines is true that sounds like a benefit. My 320i runs dirty on 95 though.

Yep.

It's not like the manufacturer recommends the better fuel for fun.

I get around 5% more miles from a tank of Super unleaded, and sometimes the pickup seems crisper.

This also applies to bikes like BMW twins and Harleys.

Where does the manufacturer state the recommendation? To be fair I could have missed it when reading the 232 page (!) handbook. laugh

Manual only suggests E5 or E10 and tells you to look at the clearer guidance on the fuel flap

As an example, Renault recommend the Clio 182 to have 98 octane. They put a sticker on the fuel cap.
