Hi,

I'm interested in the car and am considering bidding in the auction, but apologies I just want to check a few details if that's OK as I live a fair way away so viewing is tricky.

Gearbox service – Has the 7G-Tronic gearbox oil and filter been changed, and if so at what mileage?

Differential service – Has the rear differential oil ever been changed?

Brakes – What is the current condition of the brake discs and pads (particularly the front AMG discs)?

Roof operation – Does the folding roof operate perfectly with no hesitation or warning messages, and have there ever been any issues with it? Can you post a video of it working?

Suspension / underside – Any rust on suspension components or rear subframe, and has anything been replaced recently?

Faults or warning lights – Are there any warning lights, faults, or issues with the car currently?

Modifications – Is the car completely standard, or have any modifications been made?

Many thanks for your time – it looks like a great car and I just want to make sure I understand everything before bidding.

Best regards,
Nick

Hi Nick.
Thanks for the interest. Sorry for the late reply, just got home. No worries about the questions, more than happy to answer anything.
so:

The gearbox oil and filter were replaced at 66547, before that, they were done at 29953. To my knowledge, the diff oil has not been changed.
The brake discs and pads have all been checked at the last service in Feb and found to be 30% worn on the front and 10% worn on the rear but with the recommendation that the discs may need to be changed at the next pad change. They are not scored and work fine but apparently have slight lipping. I have previously checked out the cost of replacing the discs and thankfully, they are not the fully floating ones that cost a fortune. From memory, genuine OE front ones were only around the £200 mark.

Roof operation...it works perfectly and always has in the 6 years i have had the car....both from the inner controls or the remote keyfob operation. There was a tiny issue a couple of years ago where the limit switch that checks whether the inner boot divider is in place failed....but a replacement second hand one for a few pounds on ebay was a 2 min fix. The R172 also suffers from a very common problem as it turns out, where the roof leaks and drops water onto your shoulder when accelerating and cornering. The factory sealer between the glass roof and the cant rail breaks down over time. All it took was to cut out the old, reseal with new and voila, a non leaky roof again. I very rarely drive the car in the wet and it is always garaged so there was never a situation where water ever got the interior wet, only my shoulder and the seatbelt! The nearside doesnt leak, but if it ever does, don't go down the whole main dealer roof replacement route costing thousands...it is a cheap fix. Never had any warning messages, other than the boot divider not closed warning which as i said was a very quick cheap fix.
I'll post a video of the operation tomorrow when it is light again.

Suspension/underside. Most of the suspension components are aluminium on the AMG so not susceptible to rust. As for everything else, As far as i know and have seen, it is all tickety boo. The guys who service it at Project AMG are properly fastideous and would have mentioned any issues with rust. I did replace the front lower control arms last year on the advice of the wheel alignment specilaist i use for its yearly geometry check as they said there was slight play in the joints. There are no knocks or clunks from any part of the suspension and i have to say that fitting the Michelin Pilot Sport 5's recently was a marked improvement on the OE Pirelli P Zeros (Mercedes Specific) that i had previously run the car on. The brake lines were noticed to have light surface corrosion a few years ago so they were all treated at the time.

There are no faults or warning lights. Shortly after getting the car, an ABS wheel speed sensor failed which knocked out the ABS, traction control, distronic cruise control etc, but that was sorted through the main dealer warranty i purchased the car through.

The car is completly standard, but utterly loaded with optional extras, Project AMG said they have rarely seen a SLK so well specced.

If there are any other questions you think of I am more than happy to answer. I could talk about the car for hours......I am not out to pull the wool over anyones eyes and know that if you're travelling a distance then you don't need any surprises.

All the best, Neil

Hi Nick,

I have the video of the roof operation, but the file is 75mb and i can only post a max of 10mb! Not sure whether it is allowed but if you send me your email address i'll try to send you the file that way.....or, I think if you ask for a viewing, our contact details can be shared that way.
Let me know how you get on. ATB, Neil

Hi Nick

Apologies you are unable to add the video size... one solution would be to upload to "you tube" the video of the roof opening and then post the link here in the comments for all to see ?

Please let we know if we can help in any way .

Hi 116nellie, the rear badging available but not on the car, is that because the rear has been painted before and not put back? And why the painting? Thanks

Hi. Re the badging, I'm not a show off kind of bloke and with the slk55, it's one of those, if you know, you know things. So I quite like the anonymity of what could simply be a 2 litre four pot if you were following it and didn't know about cars. I bought the car with the badging and it still has the dealer number plates which are usually a good indication of no damage being covered up, cause plates are sometimes bashed up. Sorry, a long winded way of saying I removed them for looks, not repair😆

Wow! So here I am sitting by the pool, enjoying a very sunny, much needed holiday in South America, browsing Piston Heads, and I find one of the best cars I've ever owned for sale! It is so good to see its continued to have been lovingly maintained and cared for, as I had ensured. I was the 2nd owner, I searched the country for this model SLK, it's so underrated, and if you know you know! I found 'slick' at MB Ashford. The first owner lived between Spain and the UK, he kept the car garaged in the UK and had barely used it. From memory, it was just over 2 yrs old and had done less than 10k when I purchased it. He was moving permanently to Spain, and MB Ashford was selling it for him. I had the garage assign my plates at purchase, and when I sold 'slick' I was surprised to learn that his private plates had been permanently allocated; it's how I recognised the car! I think I kept the car for about 2 years, a record for me, and loved every minute of driving! Such a comfy cruiser with an enormous reserve of power when needed, or just when you want to hear the engine bark! An amazing car that if I had the space for, I'd buy back in a flash. I'm fortunate to have continued to enjoy hard work, and slick become a SL6.3 AMG, which became a 911 Turbo S, which become a Tesla Model X (read family). Now it's a RR Sport and a massive mortgage lol! Thank you for the memory trip, and good luck to winner, it's a very special car, that's very likely to become an appreciating classic!

Thanks so much for your post. When you really care and look after a 2nd hand car you always wonder whether the previous owners did the same, so it's fantastic to hear it was looked after and appreciated equally well by you.
I flip flop between light/nimble then crazy fast.....elise, griffith, elise, slk and now caterham. It's been a fantastic 6 years with the slk and I'll really miss everything it does, from cruising around to reeling in the horizon at an alarming rate....all to that fabulous soundtrack.

Neil, can you upload the Project AMG February 2025 Invoice please, and do you have photos or knowledge of the rear subframe condition? Thanks

Also do you have the invoices of service prior to your ownership, 2013 to 2019?

Hi. I'm at work till late today but I'll add those documents when I get home. Re the subframe, I'll try to get some photos tomorrow but as far as I know, it's fine. The service reports should be in the collection of digital report photos but I'll go through them and see if any are missing from the listing photo....but I do have the full Mercedes digital report from delivery mileage all the way to now....13 reports I think. They do not include the service invoice but I think rhe digital report lists all pertinent information

Apologies....the photographer took photos of the service documents but they don't seem to be on the listing. There were also photos of other invoices and the removed boot badges....I'm trying to get the link to bring them up so I'll post those too or my own photos later

Just watched the video again, the stop start inactive light is on, and there doesn’t seem to be a rectangular box around the ECO8, usually means inoperable, either non agm battery fitted or brake pressure sensor fault. Known issue, has your stop/start been playing up and is your main battery an AGM battery? Thanks
