Importing a Caterham from Isle of Man
Discussion
I'm looking at potentially importing a Caterham from the Isle of Man.
I believe the car was not fully factory built but a modular build (I believe using all new parts).
I'm guessing I'd probably have to get it IVA tested?
Anything else I need to look out for? Cert of Conformity / Import Taxes?
Any info would be much appreciated.
Thanks

IoM it outside the EU. believe it or not.
OP, do you know if they have IVA in the IoM? Was the car built and first registered there?
I believe any car imported from outside the EU needs a certificate of conformity. Or, if there isn't one available, it will need to go through an IVA test. You might not have to do that if the car has previously been through an I/SVA test when it was first completed - it's possible this might have been done in mainland UK prior to being shipped to the island. If so, the car should come with a MAC certificate which I would guess would satisfy the requirement.
You migh well have to pay import duty though ...

If the car has been previously registered in the IOM, and has been used on the road over there, I would have expected that all you will need to do is transfer it onto a UK plate at some future date (within 6 months I think). I don't believe there should be any issues. If however it has never been registered in the IOM then it could be a very different ball park, and will have to be put through all the kit car checks.I believe the car was not fully factory built but a modular build (I believe using all new parts).

During an SVA test a while back a Range Rover was in the next bay. This was being re-imported from the US.
If a production vehicle manufactured in the UK has to be SVA tested then I'm guessing an import from another country will need to do the same.

ETA. The only guys who can tell you for sure is VOSA. Fortunate really as asking DVLA a simple question like this would not be a fruitful endeavour.

I bought a second hand BMW motorbike from the IOM a couple of years ago. All I needed to do was transfer to UK plate within 6 months. I took all the paperwork to the local DVLA office took about a week longer than a cherished plate change,Gassing Station | Kit Cars | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
