Hey guys, i'm currently building a Westfield XTR2 and the standard fuel tank placement is between the seats and the engine. I'd love to free up some space and get the fuel away from the exhaust manifold etc.

Unless I turn it into a single seater (genuine option biggrin) theres is nowhere else I can think of apart from on the side of the chassis (see picture), inbetween the chassis and bodywork. I'm pretty sure i'll have the space/be able to fit the tank okay, my main worry is the safety and legal side of things and how much it will affect the handling.

It goes without saying that it will be a proper fuel cell made by one of the top companies, hopefully wont have to "custom" to help keep price down etc.

Im pretty sure that a proper tank, fitted correctly should be safe and legal. (don't Ultimas have side tanks?)

As far as wieght distribution goes, it looks like i'm moving it from just about the best place to possibly the worst! lol how much difference do you guys think it will make? Hopefully should be able to get about 30+litres so when full gonna be a fair amount of weight there.

Thanks in advance thumbup got plenty more questions if your interested biggrin

Cheers

As you say Ultima have tanks at the side. Most se7ens have them at the back which is far more liable to crash damage than a side impact.
I would be looking to use 2 tanks to evenly distribute the weight.

You'll be wanting to read the latest IVA manual for M1 cars on this page:
http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/action/detail...

direct link to pdf: https://online.businesslink.gov.uk/Transport_files...

Not much specific about fuel tanks - mustn't leak, must be separate from the passenger compartment (including the filler hose), if it is breached, fuel mustn't be able to get into the passenger compartment. Must be secure, away from heat and sharp edges.

Nothing specific about position, so you should be fine.

Thanks for info! thumbup My next road car will hopefully be a se7en and wasn't aware that a lot had rear tanks.

Yeah two tanks would be ideal, but would like to use the other side for radiators/coolers etc. The tank will block any air flow from the side vents, and, erm... have you seen the price of those things!!!! biggrin
