Guys,
Reviewong my budget for a 7-style I'm probably looking at a Pinto engined model.
I know a lot of people don't like the pinto due to it's weight etc. but currently that looks like what I'll get.

Now in the future if budget allows I'd condider 'upgrading' to a duratec/zetec - my question is how hard would this be?
Are the exhausts on the same side? are the mounts in significantly different places?

Sorry for the questions but I like to do my research before parting with cash.

Oh another quicky - whats the Ford 1600/1700 X-Flow like? and again what about the swap to later Ford power. Seem to be a few of these around in Westfields.

Cheers

The x-flow is a decent engine, but very old technology. I have a 1660cc one in my 7-alike, and it's working fine. However, if it stopped working I wouldn't spend any more money on it, as Zetec's are as cheap as chips and give more power in standard tune than my moderately-tuned x-flow. And if you tune the Zetec, you can get heaps more power!

The only downside to the Zetec is its size - the x-flow is a very small engine.

Either Pinto or Xflow to Zetec is a well trodden path. It's straightforward enough on the whole, but not super-cheap, as you'll need to sort out exhaust, cooling, sparks and possibly fuel as well.

Engine mounts & exhaust etc are all simlpe enough.

Like many, I've done a Xflow to Zetec Silvertop conversion. Was well worth the effort given the Xflow was getting tired. 168bhp from a box-stock 2l silver top with DIY TBs and a standard Westfield exhaust.

Shouldn't be too hard but Pinto has the exhaust on the o/s. Zetec and Duratec are on the n/s in rwd configuration, so will need new side panel holes cut and the old one filled in. Swap from cross-flow would be easier as that is n/s exhaust.

Cheers guys.
Will be taking this into consideration when I part with my cash.

Will the zetec bolt straight onto a type 9 or MT-75 'box?

Pinto - duratec would be easy though Not a cheap solution since the exhausts are on same sides.
Xflow-Zetec have exhausts on opposite sides to pinto and Duratec, so if you have xflow then Zetec is best swop option.
So I suggest that whatever you get you stick with an engine which has exhaust on the same side, as your original.
Neither will be cheap, but Both are well worth the money spent.
IMO pinto's and X flows ought to be banned when Zetecs are so cheap, and economical, and powerfulthumbup

Yes box fits easy but you need to mess around with engine mounts (maybe escort??) Transit van release bearing and clutch from oh I've forgotten. And starter motor housing needs grinding down too and ideally fit a CVH (escort) starter motor. Apart from that all straight forward.

I am interested in potentially swapping my pinto out next year for possibly a zetec. Currently have a rebored 2.1L pinto running on webbers and putting out around 175bhp.

I would be looking for someone to do this for me as i just dont have time. Anyone have any ideas on price?

I'd be surprised if your 2.1 pinto has a true 175 BHP, A standard 2L zetec on TB's [About 160-170 real BHP] will feel much more potent and do around 35-40MPG. compared to your webered pinto's low 20's if your lucky!! so do it.

So would I; very few Pintos genuinely produce that sort of power.

i swapped my pinto engine for a brand new zetec blacktop.if you go on ebay there is a brand new one for only £500 starting price. if not go onto great british sportscars website,i paid £700 last year. on ebay, second hand for only a couple of hundred quid, but cant garantee how good the engine will be. if you google zetec inside, there is great info on fitting a zetec and what parts are needed. off the top of my head are the parts i needed and paid..engine £700. R1 bike carbs £100.bogg bros.inlet manifold and rejetting of carbs £250. engine mounts £50. megajolt 3D ecu kit £170. stainless exhaust manifold £220. new alternator £50.new startermotor £60.clutch £70. i modified my own sump so didnt cost anything, but would cost you upto £200 to buy.i made my own alternator bracket and idler pulley bracket so didnt cost anything.you can buy these from retro ford. My pinto engine was quite high spec and in reality only put out 146 bhp on the rollers. My zetec engine has totally changed the way my car drives and handles, loads smoother and loads more torque right through the rev range, unlike my pinto engine which was all or nothing if you know what i mean.ANDY
