Hi, Covered more than enough times in quite a few forums but i am struggling to find a list of engines that *could* go into a Tiger Cat apart from the obvious duratec and zetec's.

Having just been outside and measured up the engine bay i am struggling on determining what engines i could pop in plus associated guff (guff meaning battery, pedal's, clutch, turbo?!?! etc.)

Someone has previously linked to a dodge viper engine in what i remember to be a westfield, but i am struggling on finding the link.

I wasnt looking on spending horrendous amounts but seeing as it might as well be winter time currently and i can't drive the tiger due to the excessive amounts of rain we get in Manchester it might as well go in for a refit of some kind before it's MOT next year.

Ideas? TIA. M

(ps. i dont fancy phoning Chester sports cars and tiger and asking how much it would be to put something stupid in it..)

You don't say what is in there now.
You don't say what you want to use the car for. This, as much as anything, will determine which engine is best suited.

Zetec and Duratec are fine. Big engines are a waste in a light weight vehicle. Bike engines are best suited to the track and are no fun at all if stuck in traffic.

Richard, here at Southways Sports Cars (new owners of the SuperCat project), is building a SuperCat for himself and plans to put the Mi16 engine in it so we will soon know if that fits.

It's true I'm in the early stages of building a "MiCat." It should be a great engine to use in one of these types of car, in my opinion anyway. It's light, it's punchy and it's brilliantly designed, yet simple.
However it's also going to be a fairly/very difficult task to get it to work properly, so I couldn't actually recommend it to anyone. Plus the engines were never exactly commonplace, and are even rarer now.

I'm having to re-engineer half of the chassis to get it to work, but the car will still be a SuperCat. With this in mind, you have a Cat already....choose your engine/transmission package and pay us to build you a chassis to match it! Then re-clothe it in your exsisting bodywork! Job done wink

With enough funding, anything is possible!

Otherwise, I'd say the K-series VVC lumps look like they'd be an easy-ish fit. They hook up to Type 9 boxes with just an adapted bell housing, they're compact and insanely light and should be easy to mount. Management might be the only issue with a VVC version. They were good enough for Caterham too!
Otherwise Vauxhall red-top is another good one. If you wanted to be really rare a Clio 172 lump is an absolute beauty as engines go, but size issues and finding a transmission to mate to it could be an issue, and then you're back into chassis issues again. Cat's are designed around the Type 9 box, which is fairly narrow, so any other transmission could mean a headache in the transmission tunnel.
