Hi guys,

hoping you can help, ive been looking for a kit car for some time and have toyed with the MEV's Dax etc but have just realised that i have a Mitsubishi FTO "spare" that i could use. ive had the car 5 years so i know it pretty well - nice 2.0 V6 - but have no idea whether i could use an existing kit, or adapt an existing kit so i dont have to get another car as donor (it would also help on keeping costs to a minimum)

hoping you guys can help me out...

cheers,
Dave.

The usual advice is to find the kit you want then buy the donor/parts for that. I know of no kits for the FTO and while you may be able to adapt something to use the engine it will always cost much more to do it that way.

So I'm afraid it would make more sense to sell the FTO and take it from there.

The obvious choice would be an Evo IV or V/VI (I forget which) running gear transplant. 300bhp and 4wd in a prettier shaped car. Lots of conversion done - google it.

I thought that might be the answer, its just a shame that ive got a car where the running gear is good but the body isnt. I dont know a great deal about kits so thought i'd ask.

Shame i cant put that nice v6 to use.

You probably could with a bit of chassis modification - there are a few mid engined space-frame cars about. Is the V6 a narrow angle one so quite short? Even better if it is packaging wise. That said you'd be designing based on what you have rather than what is appropriate.

i know lots of people who have done that conversion, the galant vr4 conversion is also very common wink

its the engine thats good, and the body thats not so what i want is the other way round...

i have no idea if its a short block V6 but as its 24 valves, i'm guessing its not but never mind, i liked the idea of having something that not many other people have, but i guess that there are reasons why there isnt a kit for that running gear.

race mag is unsing the windscreen/wipper mech in its Godiva project car. Neil has also taken a mold of the FTO roof and windscreen frame as well. its going to be mid engine. he is fabbing it all up in his shed at the moment. being documented in the mag.

he is going to run the Mitsubishi 380 engine in it though, which is a 3.8l DOHC version of similar architecture to yours. the drive line in the FWB mitsubishis are quite eficent as there is only the two shafts in the gear box and then the drive is direct onto the diff, no hypod gears or 3rd lay shaft to lose power in.
