IVA and reverse.

Can anybody confirm if the requirement for reversing is simply to move the car backwards or does it have to move over any height block ?

Needs to be capable of moving the car & driver backwards over a few feet of flat ground, never seen anything more than that done. We use an electric reverse on the Furore which is more than adequate for the task - never had any issues at IVA with it.

Thanks , i've fitted busa into a Caterham 7 and didn't want to fit a reverse box, so i'm using a 1.4kw gear reduction starter onto a gear on the output shaft. I've had to reduce the diameter of the gear from 165mm to 140mm, as i've fitted a hydraulic release for the clutch, this has speed up the reverse speed but lowered the torque from the starter so wanted to make sure i didn't have to go up a slope or ramp.

So you need a reverse now? Quite a lot of BEC didn't have any when I was looking two years ago. I don't think the MOT has any requirement for a revers light (mine doesn't have one) so is one definitively required?

Thanks Steve, already got a reverse light that operates off a dual output relay so when the button is pressed for the electric reverse, light comes on, amazed myself when it worked.

Yes reverse if definately needed for the current IVA test

Yes, reverse & a working reverse light that either comes on when reverse is selected or has an illuminated switch to give a tell tale has been a requirement ever since we switched from SVA to IVA. Lots of stuff in both IVA requirements & construction & use regs which aren't in MoT requirements!
