My first kit car is a cheap and basic tj hornet with an engine which I'm haveing trouble identifying. The previous owner said the engine was a kent crossflow.....makes sense from a mk3 cortina; then passed me a manual for a mk4/mk5. As a result I thought I had a 711M block, but since reading the code and doing some research it could be a pinto, but I haven't found any direct evidence.

There are two codes top is 70HM6015AA, which I beleive relates to the whole engine; the secound code is an indented code AR91167. Iv'e checked on Burton and my engine was cast/built in either 1980 feb or march. So at the momemtn I'm totally confused. I just need to know what the block is so I can be sure to get the correct replacement sump.

Any advice would be greatly apreciated.

The two engines look totally different to one another They could not be more obvious

Most obvious difference is the exhausts are on opposite sides. Pinto see below, note the cam belt at the front too which is also a big big difference.

and below is the Crossflow The exhaust is on the nearside.

Obviously the carburettors often get changed for more performance but the exhaust is easiest to describe the differences here

X Flow has the exhaust on the passenger side, Pinto on the drivers side.

looks like you are correct with the build date

I don't know if all X Flow engines had the same sumps, but possibly worth contacting a specialist to see if you need a shortened sump for more road clearance. Pinto engines often have this done in 7 type cars.

Edit - beaten to it!! must type faster.

It's a pinto, thanks; so next question. Where can I get a pinto modified sump and pick up pipe, burton don't sell them. Like I said I could by a second hand sump and modify it, but i'd rather get a pre-modified.mive seen a few but they have reduced capacity or no baffles.

Anyone got one to sell?

Got my sump, about £100 with pick up pipe and plug, they offer a discount for exchange on top of that. Ebay, premier Motorsport, for those who ore interested. Checked to get my sump modified it's about £100 to get it done locally that's if I provided the design and drawings, without modifying the pick up pipe and without replacing the plug. It's a bit rusty as well so it's a no brainer.

My advice from this experience, if you cant get the drawings, cut, fold and weld the steel yourself, buy one.
