With the trend for newer donors for kit cars now the increase of mx5 and bmw being used as donors instead of the old seirra's which is good about time too. But what i don't get is why more companies don't base there kit cars on the toyota mr2 and mgf/tf.

Case in point with mev with the sonic and rocket they use focus donors so you got to re route everything to fit in a mid engine configuration instead of the fwd layout of the donor, increasing costs and time building the car. When if they used a well proven mid engine layout like the mr2 there is no need to modify things like gear linkages and so on. You can pick them up for very little money most like the mx5 tend to suffer with rust and you can get the turbo version with 200bhp so its very cheap to get good power.

The only kits that im awear of using a mr2 apart from crappy ferrari replicas is the new r-tec la bala or can be anyway and gtm used to use tf engines in there libra and spyder.

So why don't more kits use them and do any more manafactures use them.

Furore F1 uses MR2 MK1 as donor, only non MR2 part (apart from Furore supplied bits obviously!) is Fiat steering rack.

MR2 turbo engines are basically either 225bhp (rev 1 & rev 2) or 245bhp (rev 3) as std, some say the later versions (rev 4 on) have 260bhp. The std 0-60 times are about 5.7 secs. They rev to 7k rpm easily and have good torque. They can all be very easily upgraded to 300bhp using mostly std parts or upgraded from 300bhp+ and way beyond when forged pistons, larger turbo, injectors, stand alone ecu etc etc are fitted and mapped.

I have the Rallyreplicas RS200 turbo which uses the MR2 SW20 turbo platform, engine, running gear, etc with genuine sized 200 bodywork panels over a space frame. The car is around 350kg lighter than the std MR2 turbo GTS (lightest production version road car).

There was another short lived Australian Stratos kit, also based on MR2 donor parts.

Lister Bell are open to customer's individual requirements for rejigging for different donor's.
Recently, for a Mondial version of their STR chassis.

I used a Mk2 MR2 gear stick in my Hawk:

It's interesting that a scan through http://www.totalkitcar.com/tkc_article_306.php shows just how old the donor cars need to be for these kits.

Am I right in thinking that the OP was looking for evidence of "classic" car kits based on much newer donors than we are used to seeing?

Certainly, as things are, I think it will become increasingly hard to find 30-year old donor cars in good enough condition to warrant using as bases for kits.
