Guys,
Been looking at a few westies recently and most have the standard roll hoop.
I'd really like one with the RAC spec bar.
How hard/easy is it to swap from a standard to RAC?
Is it a case of takinf the rear tub off?
Are they standard sizes or do they differ between narrow and wide spec?

Cheers

Reasonably easy, the bars are different widths for narrow/wide though. On my car, the cosmetic bar was held in by one bolt per side, the RAC by three, so it involved drilling three new holes to mount it, if you have a boot box and/or cover, then these need to be removed, and if you want to retain them, modded so the struts can fit. I think most chassis have the mounting points for the struts down on the chassis rail by the fuel tank, but if not they would need to be fitted.
As said, look over on the WSCC boardroom for more info on fitting and modding bootbox/cover.

All chassis have the rear fittings welded in for the struts. You can mod the boot box to get the bars to go through them and then make a seal up to stop water ingress, although have fun drilling the holes in the right place. I believe the roll bar is pre drilled for mounting bolts and bolts straight in. Easy to do, but yes, there is a difference between wide and narrow bodies width.

Mine just bolted in/on to my 1992 narrow bodied SE, no mechanical hassles at all. The only thing I had to attack was the boot box to make holes in the fibreglass bottom for the rear support struts.

Having seen a picture of a Westfield that had slid along the wrong way up with the simple hoop I would recommend the change to the RAC one. The hoop was bent back flat with the top of the boot in the photo.

i've just done the conversion. won't bother in butchering the panel so i'm gonna install a nice flat carbon fiber panel and ditch the boot idea.

Try these guys:

http://www.procomp.co.uk/

They do lots of racing Westfields among other more exotic racers and did an excellent job of replacing the whole front end of my Locost. It now handles a lot better than it did before the crash.

Matt and Ivan have their own cage design which is certified for MSA use and looks quite nice too.

Very straight forward job ... apart from making the holes nice and neat for the members which rake rearwards.

I couldn't figure out how to do this and it looked a mess.

Annoyed 'til I sold the car. grumpy
