Carburettor settings help please
Discussion
My friend has a 2.0 ford pinto with a R32 cam in it.
He has just bought some Dellorto 45's but has no clue what chokes or jets it should be running.
Could any body shed any light or knowledge onto us please.
Any other settings we should know about also?
All help and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Ben

besides cleaning i would do nothing for the moment:
fit them, check how they are running (e.g. flat spots), check the colour of the sparks / check the mixture with a co-tester.
from this base you can go further!!!
can you investigate where the carbs had been fitted before?
my mates and me are driving certain kitcars, all ford crossflow powered, all same tuning stage, all with 40ies weber carbs...all engines are running well...and there is not one pair of carbs which is "nearly" similar set than the others.

When I was in a similar position as the OP, I contacted Dellorto UK http://www.dellorto.co.uk/default.asp
I explained to them what my engine set-up was, and they gave me some good base settings to start with. Then it was a case of fine tuning on a rolling road.

Dellorto 45´s are not so common as Weber...the only engine i remember spontaniously factory-fitted with Dellorto 45´s is the 2 /2.2 Lotus 907/ 912 (Jensen Healey, Lotus Eclat, Elite, Excel).
so they should do the job on a pinto with the orignal setting (for the moment), despite the fact that they came from a Lotus engine.

I put Dellorto 40's on the Pinto engine in my old kit car (along with a Kent FR32 cam & a big valve head). I got them off an Alfa Romeo at a scrapyard for a fraction of what I'd have had to pay for Webers. Once I'd got the jetting sorted they were fine.so they should do the job on a pinto with the orignal setting (for the moment), despite the fact that they came from a Lotus engine.
i´m speaking of dellorto 45´s and not 40ies....those are indeed factory fitment (incl. weber or solex) on all older alfa romeos.
if you search the web you will find lots of controverse discussion that 40ies arent an upgrade on a pinto.
a well jetted 32/36 downdraught could do its job until ~150BHP...alternative 45´s. a pinto is one of the rare engines where a double 40 setup makes no sense.

I wouldn't disagree, in fact when I was looking for suitable carbs at the time, the 38DGAS (which I think was used on the old Ford V6's) was one of the recommended options. The main reason I went for the twin sidedraughts was the (lack of) height under the bonnet. Since my engine was probably only about 130bhp anyway, which was sufficient at the time, I didn't bother going to 45's.if you search the web you will find lots of controverse discussion that 40ies arent an upgrade on a pinto.
