It would help to know:
  • what exhaust you have on at the moment
  • how loud it is (ie. in decibels, measured in the standard manner, which is usually at a distance of 1 metre, 45 degrees from the exhaust outlet and at 2/3rds maximum engine revs) and;
  • who thinks it is too loud (police, trackday circuit operators, or is it just giving you a headache)?
You will never get a really quiet side-exit exhaust on a 'Seven' and most people don't want to compromise looks and ground clearance by fitting an underslung system, but re-packing your existing silencer (they all blow out the fibreglass wadding over time), or fitting a large diameter, re-packable silencer from someone like Wunoff or Tech-Craft may help.

Basically, in an absorption type silencer, it is the fibrous packing material which absorbs the sound waves. The first thing you should check is that the material is still in good order and replace it if it has deteriorated.

If the packing is good and the exhaust is still too loud then you need a silencer with a larger volume of absorbing material. It may need to be longer, larger in diameter or both. The alternative silencer designs, with sound cancelling internal baffles, need to be tuned to specific engines to be fully effective and they rarely look good enough to be mounted externally as part of the car styling.

could you post a picture of your existing silencer?

Wunoff suplied me a silencer for my sylva, years ago, to quieten down the car for my locval MOT....and they did a perfect job...but the can was quite large (diameter)....but also looked nice!!!

also never forget: the cars noise is not always linked to the silencer only.

a rather open induction system will also increase the noise!!!

That is a truly excellent looking Kit Car.

I think it must be one of the best Robin Hoods I have ever seen.

And I have owned four over the years and seen hundreds.

That is a truly excellent car.
