I would much prefer to have a Kseries or a Bike engined one but it appears Under £5500 a bike engined car is going to be too much of a push.
You'll probably struggle to find a K-series engined car, either: it's not a commonly used engine in 'Seven' type cars (except for Caterhams, which will be out of your budget). You might be lucky, but they are few and far between.

1. Where would you recommend searching
2. In your opinion what would be the best option for such a small budget
3. Do any of you store them overnight outside? It will be in the garage most of the time but Id like to be able to make it secure enough and put a cover over it to be able to leave it overnight without loosing sleep in the event im staying away.
4. What's the crack with bike engined stuff, hard to drive and stay clear until I've had a 'normal' engined one or go for it?
1. PistonHeads classifieds and ebay are as good a place to start as any.

2. A Sylva Striker, or one of its derivatives (Fisher Fury etc.). Avoid R**** H***, LocUst (which was a plans-built car that had had a plywood body over a very simple ladder frame chassis) and LocOst (which are plans-built cars based on a build-your-own-car book by Haynes) unless you are confident of your ability to assess build quality, as there are a lot of cobbled-together sheds amongst these marques and their designs are not amongst the best.

3. I have, in the past. My first Westfield lived outside without a cover (just a tonneau cover for the cockpit) and was fine, but you might want to consider a breatheable cover. In term of secutity, depending n what sort of neighbourhood you live in, a hidden fuel tap and ignition cut out switch will be sufficient to discourage casual theft.

4. Discussed to death on here; personally, I'd suggest you avoid as a first 'Seven' unless you're mecanically adept and intend mainly track use.

You'd be well advised to get to some of the shows as well. Detling in Kent is coming up over Easter weekend and Stoneleigh (warwickshire)is 6-7 may and the bigest show of the year. There'll be lots of owners and cars there to look around and chat with.

I leave mine out overnight at shows and when touring. it's immobilised and I put a cover over it. Never had a problem but only left it on a town street in France, Swiss' and Italy.

Engine wise k-series are ok and plenty of Zetec engined cars about. If you fancy a bike engine get to a show or club meet and blag a ride, but ask them to cruise around as well as just rag it. That way you'll get more idea what they're realy like to live with. No reason not to have one as a first kit (I did) and take both the pro and con arguments with a large pinch of salt. I'll be at Detling if the weather is dry and def' at Stoneleigh and will be happy to run you around.
