I've been looking round since I finished my GKD kit for another to build.

I'd like something interesting, well designed and well built.

The Lister bell stratos was looking promising but its above what I could afford to build. A GDt70 would be top if I had a 40k budget.

So for a maximum build cost of 20k what is there about? I honestly couldn't find/think of anything so have a Series 1 Datsun 240z project at the minute.

Is there a gap in the market for a quality midrange kit?

Its a little ugly(to me) and at 20k i'd like something that a little more useable. It might look better once finished though I guess.

Their other car is quite a nice looking bit of kit.

I'm curious, Jason, how much did your GKD cost to build? Which leads to my next question - how much more are you expecting from your £20k kit?

It might be a bit too much of the same thing, but what about a GKD Evo?

I'm guessing the chassis would be pretty much the same as your legend though.

Howdy.

You can build a gkd m3 for under 10k, however the spec I built mine in was a good chunk more! The dash/logger/camera system was 2kish. Racelogic another £1k, add on decent wheels/tyres/setup/over specced radaitor+oil cooler and it soon mounts up.

I'm waiting on seeing the GKD EVO after its re-style. The chassis isn't the same but the geometry is so it'll be a handling package to match the very best if set-up correctly.

When you say how much are you expecting from your 20k kit, what exactly do you mean?

Well, I'm guessing that you don't want to do another 7 style kit, so you're looking for something a little different.

I'd agree that an M3 Legend could be built for £10k, as could lots of other 7evens, but I bet most of them end up costing more because of the bell & whistles. You want to do it properly, right?

The point being that you could do a budget Cobra for £20k, or a budget Murtaya, or Sebring, or maybe even a super budget Stratos, but they wouldn't do the car justice.

Just wondered what you were looking for - more performance, better (or different) looks, or something a bit more usable as an everyday car?

Personally, I've always liked the Fury and the various Marlin cars.

That's the rub, whatever I built, I'd once to do properly and to a nice spec/standard.

I'd prefer something more useable than a 7. I did look at the GD cobra's but they'd be over 20k when done. I did think about putting a bmw 4.4v8 in a GD Cobra(euro chassis) and doing a 'modern version'. This would lower the cost's quite a bit as I could run it on the standard ecu, standard gearbox etc.

I don't think I could get more performance out of anything that I had out of the m3 engined gkd. 0-100 in 7 isn't to be sniffed at, it also stopped and went round corners with the best of them.

I did realise I didn't need that much performance!

Have you looked at the SDR V-Storm? You could build one of those within your budget

It looks like a nice kit, just not that 'useable'. Also I don't see what it could offer me over my previous build.

Keep the suggestions coming though smile

I thought of the V-Storm too, and the Deronda, but sort of guessed you weren't after an Exo.

It does seem that what you are looking for isn't really there at the moment. A Libra might have been an option - you could try to find a part built one and finish it.

Marlin 5EXi is a little different, not one of my personal favourites (I prefer the style of their Sportster and the older cars.) I think the problem that you are running into is that the cars that might have fitted the bill have faded away in the face of competition from second hand MX5s, Elises and Z3/4s (among others).

How about saving up for a Stratos replica?

Jason,

Maybe have a go at a Daytona Coupe?
It's BMW based and the 4.4 V8 would fit.
When using many parts from the donor you can be very close to 20K.
You can use things like the aircon from the BMW.

I know, i'm looking into the kitcar void!

A listerbell stratos would be worth saving for! Or just get a z3m coupe!?

The marlin 5exi looks like a ford KA that's been left in the oven and melted(IMO!). Add to the fact I did look at building a sportster but their attitude on the phone put me off.

Any hi-res pics of the finished item? Is the one shown on the Daytona page on your site one of yours (on UK plates and can just about make out number...)?

@Jason: Shelsley T2 (if you can still get them)?

A thought occurred to me - how about a Speedster replica?

I haven't looked at the costs, but it's got to be less than £20k. OK, it's never going to be fast but it might float your boat.

They can be made quite fast in a straight line, scooby transplant.

I think I'd stick with the VW lump for authenticity (and clean underwear).

Although an Alfa boxer might be a nice halfway house ...
