thought you guys may be able to help, I have an old 1977 Taimar which I am going to restore, however, I am thinking of turning it into a road legal track car, so in effect if I don`t use the body shell, which will save some weight, and just have some thin guage ally panels for bodywork where needed, will this still be classes as per the log book?
or will it have to be sva`d.?

just exploring which route to take but would like to know how the dvla may look upon these things.

So long as you use the 'unmodified' chassis you are OK.
You can add minor brackets to support the body but you are not allowed to cut off or add sections to the chassis.
You can also add extra stiffening members within the periphery of the chassis.

You can bolt on anything you like as being removable they do not modify the chassis.

This is obviously a simplification of the 'rules' so do some more research.

Welding to the chassis would be a mod.
Welding up a body and roll cage to be bolted to the existing chassis body mount points would not.
