Tiger E1 - Pinto/Zetec
Discussion
Hey,
Just interested to know, what are the Tiger E1's like as a drivers car? I notice that they use Ford donor parts so is it just a case of an open top Ford Escort? (I suspect not though)
Some time within the next year I'm looking for a drivers car, something with great feel and a huge fun factor.
What do you guys reckon with regards to the Tigers?
Many thanks,
Matt

Well I have had my 2 litre pinto engined E1 for just over a year and if all you are going to be using it for is on the road fun then its brilliant, perfect amount of power, handling is insane especially with a good set of tyres on. I have to really provoke mine to get the back end to step out on new toyos.
Obviously I cant tell you the difference between the two only having owned one but I used this to get myself self into a proper drivers car and gain some experience before upgrade like I'm doing for next year, hence mines for sale.
Really just endless smiles when driving, unless its raining because rain drops dont half tickle at 50 odd mph!

In the scheme of things there's a range of weights for these type of cars from caterham superlights through to robin hoods/dax's. Having owned a couple of tigers and having driven various other similar kits i wouldnt get hung up about weight to the nth degree......if its that important to anyone they'd never take any passengers!
will it be like driving a soft top ford....err no. whilst you might not want to get fussy about weight between various makes of kit ( 30-40/50kg isnt going to make a huge difference ) ....the difference between a production car at close to 75% extra weight will make a difference!
loads of threads have been started about what handles best etc.....the reality for many drivers is that at 8/10ths on the road there isnt a ton of difference ( imho ) between many of the makes, the exception being the caterham which was easier to drive quickly.
if you're unsure, find a local kit car group/club and get yourself down there for a looksee....

so as seems to be the norm every comment has to be spelled out to the nth degree lest it get misconstrued.
the reference to 30-40-50kg was in fact a reference to the likely weight differences between many of the mainstream 7esque cars.....not specfically Caterham. Budget hadn't been talked about by the OP but as he was enquiring about a Tiger e1 i assumed ( how terrible of me ) that he was pondering cars in the 4-6k range, which obviously wouldn't include Caterham.
Perhaps i'm wildly off the mark, but to my mind a Tiger weighing 630/640 is likely to be in the middle (ish ) of a range of 7'esque.....westie, gbs, rh, rush etc.
as for handling - i'm sure that there's a hierarchy which would put a Fury/Striker type car above a Tiger or others. The point i was attempting to make is it depends what the driver wants from the car. Plenty of folks own kits and don't even use them, let alone use them to 10/10ths of their potential. If the OP wants wind in the face fun to just pop to the pub then within reason just about any 7esque will fill that requirement. If they're into driving a bit quicker - given that i referred to road as opposed to track, then a Tiger ( just for example ) can be hustled along as swiftly as many others.
OP....no idea where in teh country you are, but do pop along to a kit car meet - get yourself into a few cars, see what fits you and see if they put a smile on your face.

brilliant, next time i need to buy a kit i'll task you with finding the perfect example LP. Considering that the cheapest CEC westie is £1500 more than Tiggers car ( hardly the same price range )......although might have to be very clear about the brief as a B6 is obviously BEC........
as to lightest/heaviest/average 7esque weights i don't have a book detailing them all, but merely referred to the simple fact that a few of my westie pals tell me their cars weigh 590-600, that a pals Zero weighs 600, that a cple of guys i know with Luegos are into the tail end of the 600's and a Rush/RH were into the 700's......
Note to self, must remember not to bother offering advise on here as clearly there's always some smart soul who has driven every car for 1000's of miles and who knows all.
over and out.
OP - hope you find a kit that you like and that you have miles of smiles with it.
