There is a device from the US that could allow you to keep the speedo head intact and use the electronic trigger. Can't recall the name at the moment, but by spooky coincidence, a mate is sending me one to play with as he wants to trigger one from a vauxhall abs sender so I'll be making him an interface adapter.
I'll post the name tomorrow unless anyone beats me to it.
The alternative technique works too, I had ETB put one of their electronic speedos into a Veglia casing. Worked brilliantly, but wasn't cheap and I got the feeling they'd rather not do any more!

Carbont have all the original Smiths tooling, probably make an electronic version. http://www.caigauge.com/
It's called Cable X - a box with a motor that drives the speedo cable and suitable control electronics to convert the electronic trigger to suitable drive.

Not exactly cheap mind, but IIRC, I spent close to £400 getting ETB to make me that custom Veglia speedo. My first thought was to just buy one of their speedos and swap the dial face, but of course, unless the scales match, you need software adjustments or it just doen't work, either the speed will be wrong or the odometer will be wrong. Or both of course!
Another option may ultimately be a complete instrument package swap?
