Just fitted Newman fastroad cam and modded head [ std valve sizes ] to my 2.1 pinto have set ign timing to std 8 btdc seems ok but cant try for 10 days [on sorn ] any comments veiws advice . Std Bosch electronic ign,38 dgas ,4/2/1 10 .5 is comp hope you can help ,will be rolling road set in may but would like to get it somewhere near before then

i would guess at somewhere between 8 and 12, if it starts and runs ok then it cant be far off.

Personally, for initial set-up I just swing the dizzy until it gives the smoothest, sweetest idle. If it pinks under load, back it of a tad.

Completely non-scientific, but it usually works for me until I get the chance to put it on a rolling road...

Cam set as std , swung distrib got nice 950/1000 idle sound great running no load [cant rt yet on sorn ] will dial cam in on rr later .Iwas only realy looking for confermation ,thanks guys

Update ,runs better@12degs before tdc so will see when I get chance to road test

When I was still a schoolboy racing the minis, our half baked attempt was to keep fiddling with the dizzy until you could pull away smoothly in 3rd gear! Whatever you do I would not run a tuned expensive engine too hard until you have had it tuned properly.

Was taught to dizzy swing by along gone guy who played with lambo,s etypes ferraris and mercs[40 +years ago] was looking for ball park figs to set up with timing light for a sim spec engine

Cam will need to be timed in as fast road cams have a different inlet valve fully open point compared with standard
I think Newman cams time at 110 ATDC

HI Paul yes it is full inlet lift at 110 degs atdc ,I set it up std to get it running and intend to dial it in when I go to r/r session hope fully next month
