Having spent many years dreaming of building a kit car in the UK but being limited by space and funds, I'm now in the position of being able to build one here in Australia.

Working as a mechanical design engineer I have easy access to design software and my colleague is an authorised engineer and able to sign off the design/build as required by the law here.

The company I work for is split into two, one half does mechanical repairs to trucks and excavators whilst the other builds vehicle bodies, chassis modifications and other bits of vehicle and heavy engineering.

Luckily for me this means that I an now in a great position and am currently trying to decide what to build.

I always dreamed of a 7 type car built along the lines of a locost. But now I quite fancy an Atom type open chassis.

I've yet to decide if I want to build something from scratch of design and build my own - The latter is the most interesting option but an off-the-shelf design would hopefully have less problems to resolve along the way.

So, I have a question..........

Is there a "locost" type open chassis design already available?

I've built 3 'sevens' in Malaysia 2 from the drawings in Ron Champion's book, and 1 slightly bigger which I downloaded the design for called a442as was 4 inch longer and wider and 2 taller both open source designs.

The Warner R 4 is just such a car
Designed and built by one guy in a garage, he built a other for a mate
I saw this at a North Weald handling day and it looked and handled very well
Can be found on www.locostbuilders.co.uk
And was featured in complete kit car magazine
