Advice required on Poor engine running issue ?
Discussion
Westfield with a misfire Issue, here is the spec with Pinto 2.1 engine, Twin 40’s, Kent RL1, New Competition Distributor, New Lucas Gold sports coil and another new set of Ngk plugs …
Engine starts and idles
Timing is currently set at a standard 10 degrees
VC is set to Kent settings of inlet 20 and exhaust 25 (metric)
(I also rechecked the clearances last night before engine was started all were ok ..)
Ngk ap6-fs plugs are set with a gap of 70 although I have read they can be set to a max of 100 ? (metric)
When revved it sounds like there is an occasional misfire …
I let her warm up to normal operating temperature last night and took her slowly around the block … she seemed ok but still had the occasional flutter …
So I took her round a few more times, each time a little faster ….
On my last run the revcounter went mental misreporting the revs as 4000+ when she was only doing 1500ish, the exhaust had flames coming out of it and it stopped running. It would not restart … resulting in my neighbour giving me a hand to tow it home.
When it failed the engine was reluctant to turn over, but with the immoboliser on so that there was no spark it turned over easily and quickly ?
After around 15 minutes of cooling she fired back up the same as normal ?
Any Ideas chaps ….
I’m going to try a standard coil on her tonight …then maybe a standard distributor ?

It was rolling road tuned and they diagnosed the old dizzy as being faulty ...
It then had a new competition dizzy and coil
It ran lovely for a good week then detonated its head gasket
(melted part of cylinder 4's gasket metal ring)
It had a very light and i mean very light head skim ....
and was bolted back together ....competition head gasket, all new exhaust/inlet gaskets, timing belt etc
It started first time ... and idled ....
Fueling eh ? over fueling you thinking ?
It had idle jets changed on the rolling road as she was too rich ...
Maybe the carbs have Gone out of balance ? after having new gaskets etc ?

I have had 3 weeks of head banging ,hair pulling etc after fitting a " competition distribitor " ran brilliantly for 10/12 miles and then stopped ,had sim revcounter issues but would not start ,changed coil [3 times ] new ht leads plugs still no start ,had a auto trichian check things over condemed distrib we fitted a complete system from a----sp --- started imeadiatly and now runs brilliantly the " comp distrib has been returned to supplier and I am awaiting refund . No names yet till every thing is settled . One other slight prob whilst fitting present kit the supplied 3 earth spark plugs can touch piston crown and close the gaps ,the head has had some pretty serious work , skim etc so one to remember on well tweaked 2.1 pinto engines !! fitted normal NGK no probs
Hi one eyed mick ... I'm not alone then ....
I picked up a spare standard engine a little while ago, with the view of rebuilding it as a spare and it has a standard dizzy on it. So tonight I will swap it and report back on what happens ...
Only issue there is that it has a vacuum and I really need vacuumless but it will be a good enough for testing
Out of interest what heat range are you using on the ngk's, I'm using standard 6 but I was thinking of moving to a hotter 7 ?
Also the new working dizzy does it have points ?
