First please let me say sorry for the poor spelling that no doubt this post will have, damn phone! And if in the wrong place.

Just a quickie got to insure my first kit car and wondering the best company to go with. I know Adrian Flux give a discount to PH members but are they the best etc? Or are there other companies that are cheaper?

Thanks all.

I have just renewed mine with Norton Insurance. www.heritage-quote.co.uk for the fourth year. I found there was a great variation between insurers depending on value, annual mileage etc.
My Hawk 289 has agreed value of £35,000, 10,000 miles pa, and track-day cover. Fully comp is £150 pa.

A-Plan were excellent for me. The policy is underwritten by LV= I think.

From my recent experience with them they are fking rubbish.

I was looking to get my kit insured, which at the time was about 4 months away from being IVA ready. I originally spoke to them about this and they had no problem insuring it on the chassis number as apparently they specialised in kit car insurance during build and after. Happy days.....or so i thought.

Letter after letter arrived asking for the reg number. After phoning them up explaining to them my circumstances they then tell me (a month after taking out the policy and the full amount paid!) that the chassis number would only be valid for 3 months and if i didnt get a reg number in that time my insurance would be cancelled. After a lot of pleading they agreed to extend it another month but even that wont be enough time for me to get a reg number.

Specialise in kitcar insurance?...my fking arse!

tricky one to answer as will depend on the usual factors that any underwriter would look at....
all things being equal, for me as a CEC driver in the south east Frank Pickles has been the most competitive for the past 3 years - but like all insurance its also a matter of how things are dealt with from initial enquiry through toe the 'worst case'...and in that respect as well Pickles have been faultless.
the guy to speak to is Barry Wilson, ignore the online quote system and opt for a chat with him...

I've used Footman James last couple of years - no complaints.

I've used most of the 'specialist' companies in the past and have found them all to be very similar so the best advice I can give is to shop around.

Their competitiveness varies year on year so it's worth doing some legwork (fingerwork?) before you decide.

Some companies don't offer NCB as a lot of kit car owners only insure for 6 moths of the year so they have geared their business towards that market.

Many also offer breakdown services as part of their policy.

Make sure you are comparing like for like before you decide.

Funnily enough I wrote a little article for my car club earlier this week on this subject, I’m in the process of renewing my insurance on my Sabre, valued at c£12k.

The 2011 premium with Adrian Flus was £226, last year after a bit of negotiating with them, increasing excess to £500 etc and I got it down to £210. This year’s renewal offer is £193 inc breakdown cover, which I thought was not too bad. But seeing that 2gether advertise in our mag I gave them a call and they quoted £167.50 plus £23 breakdown cover but only £250 excess. Not bad eh?

Then I tried Footman James who I’d been with before Flux but they no longer offer insurance on Sabre’s it’s not on their approved list of kit cars. Odd eh?

Idly flicking through one of the kitcar comics I tried Graham Sykes and their quote stunned me.

£87.70 full comp, 3,000 miles a year, garaged, protected NCB and only £150 excess. Brilliant eh?

So the answer really is to shop around, there's terrific variation between them all

Remember that the fun starts when you need to make a claim. I got fed up with the broker and tried to deal directly with the insurance company, which was difficult as they wanted to go via the broker. Finally settled using small claims court.

It does help when your daughter is a solicitor though.

Thanks all,

Went through Adrian Flux in the end, seamed to be nice and easy, knew what I wanted to insure etc etc. £300 for the year, me and both parents on and as it was a first kit car didn't think it was too bad. Hopefully I will never have to use the worst case but you can never tell.

Anyone that want to see it here is the new addition biggrin
