I've got a Q reg car that was built and Q'd in the early 90's. It's not a kit car with a Q, it's a one off that someone built themselves. To be more precise, it's a production car and they moved the engine from the front to the rear and made it mid engined. I recently purchased the car the worse for wear after being off the road for years and I'm going to try to get it back on the road again. With it being a Q, does that mean it will be MOT'd like a car from 1980, no D Cat and stuff like that? cheers.

Yep, just fix it and MOT it, check the V5 but it will probably be "visible smoke test only" at that sort of age.

Q plate means visible smoke check only, regardless of what it says on the V5.

Q plate cars are treated as first used 1975 when it comes to lighting.
So no hazards, reverse light or fog light. But I would imagine that if fitted then they must work.
You can't have black number plate though if the car was registered in the 90's.

It is an interesting hotchpotch of laws this business of registering kit cars. Common sense and practicality seem to be lost in the burearacratic nightmare created in this process. I attribute the general lack of sales of new kit cars and falling attendance to the kit car shows to this muddle and the costs that the bureacracy has added to building and registering kit cars. I was privelaged to be involved in kit car building in my early teens 50 years ago. In consequence I know how much easier this was then. But the new system does produce much safer cars.
