I've got a modded sump and it takes 5 litres of oil to get up t the dipstic'ks level. The manufacturer recommends 4.25 litres on a standard sump. Does it make sense that I need more oil in a modified sump? I fear that I may be putting too much oil in it.

I can only offer observations based on my Raceline sump fitted to my Blacktop Zetec. AFAIK the Zetec when fitted to a Ford is tilted at an angle and hence the sump is not as flat or voluminous as in a kit car installation. I had to recalibrate my dipstick on advice from Raceline and they too suggested 5 litres to fill.

Top Dipstick marks are only relevant to the block and are set to stop crank splashing in the oil, bottom mark is to stop oil pickup sucking air on hard cornering or braking.
The oil volume is irrelevant
Good point about the engine tilted in FWD and upright in Kit Cars this will make a difference depending if you are tilting away or towards the dipstick

Dunnel modified sump here. Again, 5l to fill, having more oil is no bad thing IMO. If you compare the before & after sump layout, you can see where some capacity is lost by reducing the depth, but then a bit more is recovered back by enclosing a void and making it part of the useable volume.
