I've got an issue with the alternator in my Fury after its rebuild, which is that it's not charging. Tested and giving about 12.5v when the engine is running , both at the alternator terminal/chassis and at the battery, and proved because it conked out within 4 miles and was totally dead frown

It has a 3 pin plug connector on the alternator - 1 horizontal pin and 2 vertical.

The wiring loom has 2 connectors for the alternator - 1 large ring terminal for the main post, then a single spade connector which I had connected to the "L" terminal which is for the warning light. The warning light didn't operate when I broke down though, it stayed off.

The alternator is with an auto-electrician to be tested, he says he has never seen an alternator than can work without having all 3 pins connected - "IG" to a switched 12V , "B" to a constant 12V , and "L" to the warning light.

Anyone have a similar setup on their car? Engine is a 2L zetec.

I wonder perhaps if I've got the single spade connector on the wrong terminal? Typically the one thing I forgot to photograph before dismantling was how it was plugged in frown

Looking at the unit from the rear , B is horizontal at the top , IG vertical on the left , L vertical on the right.

Here is a link to a thread which shows there are two ways to wire those pins but no way to define which is which. Sorry could not be more help.

Thanks for the info Steve, I've had a look through those diagrams but I'm still confused as to how the car ever worked with just the one wire on the alternator. Unless anyone has any ideas then I'll have to add the other 2 wires myself so it's done properly.

Once I hear back from the auto electrician I will know whether the alternator itself is at fault.

Heard back from the auto-electrician, apparently the alternator itself is fine when tested with all 3 wires connected, so somehow I've managed to get the wiring wrong with only 1 available wire smile

Anyone know if / which of the 3 pins is most likely to allow the alternator to work? I hope I've just got it on the wrong one.
