Hiya Chaps,

Has anyone got any decent links to online howtos on reconditioning brake parts (disc/caliper holders/calipers etc). I've managed to strip the donor vehicle gubbings (ford sierra) but googling for instructions on how to get these back into a shiny state has so far produced zilcho!

Any help would be a bonus!

Matt

I'm about to embark on this but have also found a lack of information. If anyone's got any good links or books to try I'd also like to hear them!

Cheers

When I did mine I stripped them down to individual components. Checked the piston looked ok and put that back in the callier. Then took a twisted knot type brush in the angle grinder and set to on the metal. Where that wouldn't reach had various wire brush attachments for the drill.

Was fitting new discs and pads so that wasn't a problem.

These things are pretty hefty so don't be afraid to get stuck in.

One cleaned up, painted then reassembled according to the Haynes manual.

Any parts that will be in contact with the brake fluid (pistons, bores) should only be cleaned with either clean brake fluid or methalated spirits.

If cleaning off grotty old calipers it's best to get all the worst crap off before removing the pistons.

After getting all crap off, blow everything off with air gun and give it a good swill in meths to get rid of all the dust etc.

Don't bother trying to clean up old caliper pistons if there's any sign of rust or pitting. Better to get new replacements or you risk knackering your new seals.

For the amount of time & effort expended trying to do them it's cheaper just to buy recon calipers all nicely anodised.
