A mate of mine is intent on buying an AC Cobra. Are there any good websites he can visit, with classifieds?

Do you mean a REAL AC Cobra or a replica?

Best website is probably www.totalkitcars.com, but they only seem to have one decent car available at the moment (a Crendon, which is a top flight replica, if he can afford £42K!)

For adverts, try findit; they have a specific listing section for kit cars: www.findit.co.uk/cars/kitcar.php

Obviously, E-bay as well, sometimes, but most people seem to advertise in Kitcar Magazine, 'cos they offer a repeat until sold advertising deal. Kitcar magazine also do a specific Cobra-only publication, by subscription only. See: www.kit-cars.com/

The Gardner Douglas is a very fine car, but technically is more like a Cobra-shaped TVR than a genuine Cobra (backbone spaceframe chassis, etc.).
There are several other well respected marques (Dax and Southern Roadcraft, for example), and some - like Crendon - which are much closer to the original in terms of chassis design etc.

Really depends what he's after. Be warned - I've driven several Cobra replicas from some well respected marques, and they make Griffiths and Chimaeras look nimble and technically sophisticated in comparison!

Having said all that, you'd have been better posting your question on the kit cars forum on PistonHeads - you'll get a much better response there!

Or you could look at the kit car classified ads on PH
www.pistonheads.com/sales/detail.asp?i=38896&s=130
Where you will find my lovely Cobra beast.

Cheers,

Tiptronic autobox in a Cobra replica. Well, it's certainly different!

I know someone who spent a couple of years putting a well specced Dax Cobra (Jag running gear, small block Chevy brought in from the USA with all the right dates and stuff like that). He did it for the build experience rather than for his own use. It is SVA'd and road ready. Haven't heard that he has sold it yet.

I think budget and colour preference seem to be the keys for a Cobra purchase.

Send me a mail if you think it is of interest and I will provide some contact details. Bear in mind this is a recent new build to a good spec. so the asking price will reflect that.

Was recomended to the above peeps when I was cosidering it. Never got as far as a visit as ended getting a tvr so cannot give much more info on them. Good spread of prices on there too so should be something to fit the bill.

The best used to be:

Unique Autokraft
LR Ram
Southern Roadcraft
Contemporary
Dax

My old man spent 5 years building a Unique, Jag running gear, small block chevy with a drag racing style auto box (forget the name), absolutely superb motors, don't think they are around any longer, they used to be about 5 mins away from DAX.

LR RAM was endorsed by Carroll Shelby.

Hallmark probably best source, they sold our one.

Rod Leach @ Nostalgia does "proper" (ie same jigs) cobras, but I'd try to find a RAM a southern roadcraft (they also made a superb daytona spyder replica) or a Unique. DAX make the most and are probably the best nowadays though.

Garder Douglas were ok, Crendon looked really nice as well.

You'll struggle to find a Contemporary, they were 50k about 8 ears ago, brought in by American Speed Specialities in Beckenham, but were the most beautiful cars you've ever seen, so accurate to the originals.

Would question buying a Sumo. Door handles?

Google Snake Torque. The official Cobra Replica Club.

I had a chat with him because a mate of a mate mentioned he was selling one for 15k.

I have the details of that car actually if anybody is interested, its in Wigan.

Anyhow, my mate told me hes looking around the 20k english pounds mark. Hes a tall fella, well over 6 feet, and apparently that can be a problem in some of the replicas?

He could look at (dare I say it) a PYTHON old or NEW versions in the range you are talking, and with 3" longer doors than pilgrims and 2" more than a DAX he may be able to get his legs in without inserting them up his rear fist!

Look for a Dax with the extended footwell option.

Even better, go try several cars first for size, they are buildt around the builders size. I am just over six foot and found the standard Dax ok..

The RAM is short in legroom but again it depends if he is long in the leg or the body. DAX are a tarts handbag as they are an evolution of the cobra with its 17 or 18 inch rims (bling-bling) magnolia leather and wiiiiide hoodscoop.

Do ALOT of researc as there are alot of really bad cobras out there. What does he need it for? cruising/posing or fast road work.

Sounds like he needs a trip to Stoneleigh over May bank holiday, then he'll be able to see lots of Cobra replicas, speak to owners, try different version out for size etc. Bound to find a few for sale too.
