Reverse Gearbox
Discussion
I am trying to get a hold of a reversing box that just reverses the rotational direction of the propshaft I am planning to fit a 1600cc Honda B16B (civic type-r 98) into a type 7 frame. (I know I shuld use the s2000 engine but the regulations prohibits this one!!) I am going to use a dogbox. The B series engines spins backwords as you know. I have tried to contact the sellers of the reverseboxes for motorbike engined cars but they don't think they would hold. we are talking about ca 190bhp and revs of possible 9000rpm. just 160nm torque though. Any creative souls out there? The car is just built for racing!
Bolt the flywheel on the other end of the crank
But seriously .....
What sort of rear suspension are you running ??
And what are the regs regarding diffs ??
I would say this is definately the route you should be looking at, If you can't do it, ring quaif

I have a feeling i am about to say something incredibly stupid, but what would happen if you just flipped the whole axle over 180 degrees and cut off the mountings for the trailing arms etc and re welded them on so the mounting fitted again?
that would reverse the direction the rear would turn but not change the frame at all, wouldn't it????

Au contrare sprite racer, you're spot on
I didn't realise it was a complete live axle
You may have to arse about with breathers etc but that's your simplest solution I reckon
>> You may need to be carfull about the LSD option as the diff will essentially be running backwards. But this will depend on the sort of LSD you go for

Thanks for that....but i am affraid it is not that simple... If you image the axle from the side you will see that the propshaft flange is situatet well below senter of the diffhousing!! if you know how tight the fit is for a MK frame in normal mode, you have to run the car 20-25 cm off the gound if you flip it to have some sort of clearance.
Don't you creative minds know anyone that can make me a reverseing box?

Quaife do a reverse box for the BEC's but these are prone to breaking so most people dont bother, bearing in mind the lack of torque in a bike engine that doesnt stand much for the engineering! so your motor even for a revvy car engine is still going to have too much torque for one of these not to mention they were only designed to be used in reverse occasionally and you will be using it constantly in reverse.
Your best off going to some sort of drive train company to make something up, or maybe get some sort of diff (non lsd) and lock the outer diff casing into some sort of sealed casing for oil to be put in, modify the output's to accept drive flanges that will connect to your propshaft and there you have it a permanent reverse box
just make sure you use a diff that is strong enough to withstand it constantly working.

In reverse there is a small set of gears that come into play and speed is limited to 5 mph and no throttle, just enough to reverse, it's not designed to be run that way for more than simple reversing. It's not quiet either, sounds aweful in reverse.
Can't you just use an engine that turns the right way ?

Any chance of a pic of the Eniglish axle ??
I'm still convinced that adjusting/changing this is the best option
The diff option would work but you'd get quite a bit of transmission loss, it's also going to weigh about 30kg. Also the crown wheel is going to be under twice as much load (I think)
>> not the crown wheel, the box gear stuff in the middle
think before posting
