Hi,
Im after options / solutions for above car. We have currently got an unknown condition LT77, but would rather fit an R380 or a T5 - problem is that we cant locate a suitable box anywhere.

R380
All the R380's are for 4x4's - cant find clear information on how it can be adapted for a RWD car

T5 - Not sure if one will fit and what sort we need, was thinking of a TVR one because it has the correct bellhousing.

LT77
Keep this one and get it overhauled ?

Engine is a 3.9 with mild tuning, so around 235 bhp.

Any help/advise appreciated.

Speak to some one like Dave Ellis in Nuneaton. He has reconned LT77 on the shelf.

The R380 is also used in Morgans and Westfields

The T5 from the Cosworth works but you need a bellhousing as used by TVR as you suggest.

All down to cost really.

Have already spoken to the Westfield factory, they used to just order it as a partnumber from Rover (MGB V8 Part) - and we all know what's happened to them.

Morgan route worth checking out though.

Do you know for a fact that a t5 will fit in the westfield?

R380 is also found in TVRs.

T5 as mentioned can be from a 2wd Sierra Cosworth or a TVR. As you say a TVR box will have the correct bellhousing but may have the gearstick too far forward - you may need to make an extension or bent lever of some sort.

My car has a T5 to Rover V8 bellhousing from John Eales which has a concentric clutch release. But this works out as quite expensive esp. if you have the gearbox rebuilt

Try somewhere like www.douglasvalley.co.uk they break loads of TVRs.

No idea on LT77 but I have heard Dave Ellis gets them rebuilt with a vital tougher bearing or something.

Yes definitely. However my chassis was specifically for a T5 SEiGHT - asked for at time of ordering. I don't think there's much difference maybe just the position of the gearbox mounting plate in the tunnel.

The 380 is a later version of the LT77 and is near identical in terms of size etc. Putting in a T5 means new mounting sorting bellhousing and clutch possible new propshaft and a possible new remote.

It is all do-able all depends on how much you want to spend and how much effort you want to expend

R380 was also in the MGRV8, you could have a browse round www.v8register.net for some of the MGRV8 and MG conversion specialists.

Mike

ps. If you go with a T5 don't use the Rover auto bellhousing with an adaptor plate as it won't fit in the tunnel.

pps. AFAIK the T5 has the same spline pattern as a Rover box so the clutch friction plate can the same. You may need to drill out a Rover spigot bearing for the T5 input shaft though which I think has a 15mm tip.

Due to the fact that we have the crossmember and prop for an LT77 looks like we are going to get a recon unit from Dave Ellis.
Strangley, he reckons that the LT77 is better than the R380
Never heard that one before..

Cool, he's always seemed alright when I've spoken to him at shows. Even if he always frowns when you mention rebuilding an engine yourself
