camshaft choice for pinto
Discussion
Has any body got any real world experience with different cams working in the pinto . i am intending to use it for road use and will be used with twin 40's 34mm chokes 4into 1 big valve head. The cam manufacturers give next to no info, but i want to attain peak power at around 6250 with as much torque and tractabilty at the 2,000 rpm point any ideas or experiences welcome. considerations are kent fr 32 or 34. I donot want something that just increases power at the 5500 + point with very bad tractability all the way there.
Its used in a seven type car 4 speed with 2nd gear pulling 60mph at 6000

Sounds like Dave Walker's article on Pinto tuning in the latest issue of totalkitcar magazine would be of use to you.
Personally I've built fast road Pintos using both Piper 285/2 and Burton BLF40/41 cams with 45DCOEs and both gave good pull from about 2,000rpm right round to 7,000rpm.
Think the Piper was better at low revs, but both perfectly good for road use.
Burton also do a BLF22 fast road cam with a power band from 2-7k and a BF134 'high torque' cam with 1-6.5k power band that might be worth looking at.

thanks Graham it gives me something to go on, its just that i remember a 285 in an old mini years ago which did nothing till 3000, I am now older and wiser, and seeing how slow hondas are for their relative horse power (nsx excluded) realise a good torque spread and horse power everywhere is more important than a few extra points at the top end. I'll try burton and let you know how I get on ididn't think about them

What engine size was it? Bear in mind that the same spec cam can feel different in different size engines and you'll generally get more flexiblity in a larger engine due to its extra torque.
So while a 285 might feel fairly docile in a 2.1 Pinto as I had, it might well feel 'cammier' in a 1600 Pinto.
I do seem to remember that the 2.1 perked up noticeably when the tacho hit 2,000rpm.

Could this be down to carb/ign setup??
cheers

Possibly. Can't remember what choke sizes were used with which now, but think they were different.
cheers guys sorry been out since i last posted. Its a 2.0 litre and the easiest choice is an kent fr32, should just open up the top end enough to be useful. In a seven type car its a pain when its all over at 5,500. you never know I may get a duratec motor oneday "dream " but a 150bhp pinto should be fairly tasty in a 700kg car. Believe me i hated the pinto until I got it in this car and although it sounds very mono tone it does cackle nicely on the overun and seems pretty bullet proof and cheap. i am quite fond of the old nag.
