I am looking at a few Westfields at the moment, one has the Zetec 2L 16v and the other has the Vauxhall 2L 16v "red".
Which do you guys reckon is best and what does the "red" mean.
Hope someone can help.

Thanks Ian.

The Vauxhall 20XE is commonly known as the "red top" to distinguish it from the later (and in many respects inferior) Ecotec engine, that looked simmilar but had a black spark plug cover rather than red.

The Vauxhall unit has a considerable power advantage in stock form (~155bhp on original Vauxhall injection). The Zetec has around 130bhp in stock form. Both are very tuneable, 170bhp is easy from the Vx unit, and SBD produced a bolt on kit that gave over 200bhp. The Zetec can also give big power, but requires more work to get there. Both engines very well supported in the tuning industry.

Both engines also are very reliable modern(ish) designs, both have iron blocks and alloy heads. The 20XE is quite heavy, I suspect the Zetec is possibly a bit lighter, though there won't be a lot in it.

Personaly I'm a big fan of the Vauxhall unit, so that's where my money would be heading, but in truth you won't go far wrong with either choice.

Notwithstanding condition, state of tune, etc etc you will be fine with either.

Westfield owners will debate the merits of VX:Zetec until the cows come home.....similarly CEC v. BEC....

Important point is that you are buying a reasonably modern 16V car which should prove pretty reliable, give decent power, opportunties for tuning, and will be readily saleable afterwards.

If the Zetec has throttle bodies, and if they are both standard, then they most probably put out similar power. My standard 2ltr Zetec(series 3 blacktop) puts out 175bhp, I think standard VX's are around the 180 mark. If you are planning on tuning though, I think it is cheaper to get the power out of the VX.
