Central locking solenoid

Hi
I'm looking for a single solenoid to replace the cable mechanism for my boot.
I have tried the one sold by Maplin and I have blown my second one.
The problem with the one from maplin is that if you powered for more than 2 seconds the motor inside will blow.
Do someone know a good quality piece of kit?

The Ford Puma (and I believe some Escorts) have an electric tailgate release that's just like a door lock actuator on steriods. They're the same shape & size but the gears are tougher and the motors are better built. They should cope with being stalled for up to 30 seconds at a time (although obviously, no motor actually likes this!)

How are you operating it?
If you use a 'bell push' button, then it won't get powered for more than part of a second.
I've fitted one to my GTM boot and it works fine - you're welcome to come and have a look.
(I'm guessing that you are the Jack that collected the jack from me!)

How are you operating it?

Avocet, do you have a part number for this Ford electric tailgate release?
I'm using a radio receiver and a push button to control the solenoid via a relay.
I've been mostly using the receiver which triggers the relay only for 1 second.
The receiver output last just 500ms.
If I put my Ohmmeter to check the solenoid I have now an open circuit and the 10Amp fuse protecting the circuit is blown.
Should I try to limit the current going trough the solenoid with a resistor?
I could fit a 5W 47 Ohms in series with the solenoid and this should limit the current to about 0.25Amp
What are your thought?

I'm using a solenoid which looks like the Maplin one. (Actually it was an no-name c/l kit I bought off eBay) It has a two wire configuation which depending on the polarity of the applied DC will either push or pull. For the boot operation, it's running in pull only mode.
Does your relay latch on? Or is only a momentary contact? If it's a latching relay the power to the solenoid will be more than momentary.
If you fit a resistor in series you will reduce the voltage and the solenoid may not work.
